Following my trip down to H4H this year I am planning to travel down for next years as well. But this time, I'm thinking of extending my stay to a week rather than 3 days so will be looking to play a few rounds in that week.

Recommendations would be appreciated. Not fussed on price really if I'm going to make a wee holiday of it.

Of course, I'm assuming H4H will be in Surrey again...

guess will depend on your budget but

Recommendations would be

Hindhead
Hankley Common
Liphook

As three starters

Then you have the three W’s

Woking , West Hill and Worplesdon

Going down to Stoneham

There is also Camberly Heath

At the top and you have the likes of Sunningdale and Swinley Forest

Depending on the dates we might have a mariners around there where I can invite you

There are a lot of members on here of courses around the area who could also help

There may also be a game before or after H4H as well 👍

Always welcome to try my place again Greg, but equally understand that you might like to try somewhere else having travelled that far (y).

I normally spend 2/3 days away around H4H time. Happy to play any local courses, as there aren't many weak ones down that neck of the woods. Hankely Common is favourite, but would love to do Woking & Worplesdon as sone stage. Have a good Christmas 🎄 Speak next year (y)

Cheers, will get a more solid plan in place probably around March. I will need to look at travel and accommodation options first (not even sure where to base myself for the week). Have a good one mate!

Will you be driving down or training? If your around my side of the M25 I'm happy to arrange a round on your trip down. Course plays beautiful in August
Not decided yet. If I get the car swapped over next year I will probably drive. But train was so easy last year that it's tempting just to do that again, although timetable isn't available this far in advance.

Don't forget the Berkshire, half the price of Sunningdale and arguably better because they don't force you to play off the yellows.

Top 3 to play if you're after 3 rounds;

1) Hankley Common
2) The Berkshire (do 36 if you can)
3) Sunningdale or Swinley Forest

The above courses will set you back a fortune, especially in the summer.

I think we have forumers who are members at Hindhead, Stoneham, North Hants and East Berks. Guest rates at those Clubs would be very reasonable.

Hayling is not too far from Blackmoor if you fancy some links golf. West Hill usually do a decent rate after 15.00 in the summer.

I believe the OP said not fussed on price hence them being at the North end of the price scale. 36 holes at the Berkshire is actually reasonably value compared to a lot of the other top 100 courses around. It’s also one of the few I would consider underrated.

If not fussed on price then St George’s Hill should be on the list to play. The Berkshire Red is ranked 41 by GM top 100 courses which I think is about right. Both courses at Sunningdale are closed around H4H so imagine there is a major competition on. Hankley is also a definite to play, and I would also look at Liphook and the three W’s. Great choice of courses in the area if you are prepared to pay.(y)

And there lies the personal preference side of things. The top 100 list is just a guide based on the opinion of the people who wrote it. I've played the bulk of courses on there and some of the ratings are comedy. I still remember GM removing some courses (including on where I'm a member) from the top 50 England list some years ago because they were 'too exclusive', but included Sunningdale despite the (insert very high number here) year wait list.

The courses removed were due to them not allowing Green Fees

So the likes of Bearwood , Wentworth etc where you can’t book without a member were removed

I'm aware as I play at one of the above, but if you're naming the best courses in the country, surely it should include all courses. Otherwise it should be called the best courses in the country where you can pay a visitor fee. Many of the best courses in the world are private.

That’s their criteria and it’s highlighted in that way

The welcome etc etc is all part of it and being a closed shop is some thing that’s not great in golf

It’s funny because when I was joining a short time ago as a youngish golfer with a low handicap they were the nicest by a country mile. The real ‘closed shops’, are the courses stuck in the old days of only accepting members who are referred to join by several existing members.
