It’s funny because when I was joining a short time ago as a youngish golfer with a low handicap they were the nicest by a country mile. The real ‘closed shops’, are the courses stuck in the old days of only accepting members who are referred to join by several existing members.

But yet I can book at tee time at most of those

Many of those top clubs will have long lists

The exclusive corporate ones that don’t have green fees will give membership with enough money put on the table

Neither are great but at least people can get to play the likes of Sunningdale etc

Ahh yes, nothing quite like being charged £700 for the privilege of being forced to play off the yellow tees irrespective of handicap.

My point still stands, a list of the 'top courses' should include all courses. Most places list Cypress point as the best course in the world, can you get a tee time there?

Can’t recall being charged £700 at any course that allows visitors ?

For 36 holes - so two rounds

How much is the cost to join the likes of

Wentworth , Bearwood , Wisley , Centurion

None are cheap

But there are multiple top 100 lists

The website Top 100 clubs includes the private ones

I'm aware, and it's largely used by more people because it actually includes all of the clubs (y) regardless getting a little off piste here, let's hope the op enjoys his visit the Surrey, plenty of good tracks to choose from.

I would rather have the option of paying £700 than no option at all.

I’ve played many of the Surrey heathlands, so for the OP, as has been said, Hankley is rated very highly by me and other posters above, and quite rightly so. As @richart says, West Hill do a summer twilight rate, Hindhead has a hell of a lot of character and so also will stand out in your memory.

Sunningdale (both) is a cut above the Berkshire - but significantly more expensive
Haven’t played SGH but I dearly want to

I would consider Walton Heath also (if not too far away from the rest) as the character of its heathland golf, is different to Sunningdale, Swinley, the Berkshire, 3 W’s etc, and so this will provide interest and contrast

The above courses will set you back a fortune, especially in the summer.

I think we have forumers who are members at Hindhead, Stoneham, North Hants and East Berks. Guest rates at those Clubs would be very reasonable.

Hayling is not too far from Blackmoor if you fancy some links golf. West Hill usually do a decent rate after 15.00 in the summer.
Maintenence week at Stoneham that week, so they are not taking visitors.
