Positioning of players in the line of your putt

Just an aside to the OP, the rule that prevents your partner (or caddie) standing behind you to see the break doesn't prevent them from standing on the through line the other side of the hole.

I wouldn't want an opponent standing there, so would politely ask them to move, but any sort of team game and I'd suggest they did.

Isn't that illegal in competition play?

I *think* i'm right in saying that if you have a putter like the old 'Bullseye' ones which is the same model for both RH & LH golfers and totally unmodified then you are Ok - also ive seen pro's and FC's tap a putt that's on the lip in with the back of (any) putter and no penalty has been awarded. - what you cant do is something like adjust a club mid-round

Yea, delc is right. Never knew that about putters, despite having seen so many old style putters in that form.

I'm imagining you facing a 10 yard putt, dithering and moving from Right to Left around the ball.
Whilst SwingsitLikeHogan frantically tries to keep up with you

LOL :)

But I certainly avoid standing facing the back of any player putting unless I am standing well away from him (as well as not looking down his line of putt either from behind or facing

I'm getting a sense off Déjà Vu.........

I don't care where people stand as long as they stand still.
If they stand still I won't know they're there because I'm focussing on the shot

Fine - But just because I can cope and don't care where a player stands while I am putting doesn't mean the player who is about to putt is of the same mind.

So this is just reasonable consideration for the player putting I'd have thought in much the same way as for HNSP. Golf requires consideration for others - and even better - not having to be asked to move as some players might feel awkward asking me to move and so don't.

To dispel another myth, there is nothing in the rules of golf that requires you to play specifically right handed or left handed, and you can't have a right handed and a left handed handicap, even if you can play either way round. It's just one player, one handicap.

you sum it up perfectly and i'm surprised some have to ask why & don't understand that its only courtesy - isn't that a cornerstone of our game? - like yourself I never do it in the first place as I know how distracting it can be having players hovering either in or just out of your line of sight - GL
