The others have explained it pretty well. In essence in stroke or medal play EVERY shot counts and so if you lose a ball etc you have to play another under penalty and so for the majority of club golfers on here is a much tougher examination (isn't it Bratty?) especially if you can be wayward off the tee like me. Stableford gives you a bit more freedom as a lost ball means nothing more than not scoring on that hole.
I was interested to see you say you latched onto a two ball to get your card marked. If you didn't start with them and caught them up that card won't be valid for handicapping purposes. You have to play with the same partner all the way round.
