Guys, my course was shut this weekend as waterlogged- apparently first time in several years for this reason.

Now I accept it has rained a lot in West Of Scotland, but the 'closure' for me seemed to come on the back of a request from club that people should be carrying their bags more to preserve course. I am guessing this recommendation was ignored so the outcome was nobody got to play this weekend.

Perhaps for Inland courses (in Scotland. Anyway) we should impose trolley bans in the winter, if this means shortening course etc then fair enough.

What's your view or experience of this?

Cheers

weve been on strictly carry only since mid december, like it or lump it. get plenty of those moaning but thats the only way they can get the course open so thats how it has to be. not ideal as im not supposed to carry but light bag, half set and get on with it

Plenty of courses do carry only during the wetter months

Think it's the right way to go

I did ask if we would have a trolley ban, I was informed we have a large senior section so no ban.

We do have rope barriers round most of our greens though and most areas are rerouted to avoid mushing up too much around the greens

You would not believe the number of buggies on the course the other day. I was incredulous.

It's not a members' club but rather a course attached to a hotel… and bottom line talks. There's no way buggies would be allowed at a members' club in current conditions.

A lot of clubs seem to be wanting to avoid trolley/buggy bans and just requesting they are not used, I wonder if there may have be a legal case regarding Discrimination or fear of at least?

Buggies and trykes allowed on our course (when open !!) with a Docs letter for confirmation that the old geezers can't walk, trollies allowed coz most of the club members couldn't carry an empty bag let alone one with anything in it.

We've been carry open and reduced to nine holes until late last week. They allowed trollies with hedgehogs on Saturday but personally I'm not convinced some of the holes on the back nine are really dry enough to cope. I hope I'm wrong but I think the 12th, 16th and 18th will start to be ripped up

The private members club I'm now a member of has had a B&T ban for weeks due to the extreme dampness. It has allowed the course to stay open without churning it up. This in turn means the bar, catering and pro shop all get footfall.

Another proprietary course in the area which actually drains better has continued to allow trolleys and it is a mess.

There seems no good reason to me why anyone would allow winter golf (which is only really a bit of exercise sometimes) to ruin the course for the 'proper' season.

I know that some people have dodgy backs (I'm one of them), but a pencil bag with 5 clubs and as many balls is not too much of a feat of endurance and doesn't really affect the scores as much as some might think.
