I still think they should bring in the local rule permanently though, that says you can place on closely mown, and drop through the green!

There is an approved Local Rule allowing a ball plugged in the rough to be marked, lifted and dropped (not placed or rolled), available to any club or competition committee to use when they thing conditions merit it.

The pro tours have it on their hard cards to make all competitions are consistent and save the poor pros having to read and remember the local rules for each completion.

Can you confirm, you still need to have a local rule in force to deal with Through the Green (rough) as I have played several courses where Through the Green is not covered and you play it as it lies, even if it's plugged.

As with the use of DMD I woild guess it won't be long before it becomes a rule of golf ?

Not sure why you feel this would happen as wet courses have been round for a long time and DMD's are relatively new.

The only change I have heard may happen is clubs will be able to lift and instigate preferred lies and not have to go to county for approval.

We have left winter rules in place for non comp days and finding out from the county if we can declare pick and place on fairways if conditions deem it required for a comp

Think most clubs here in soggy Shropshire will in same boat asking for extensions

I honestly thought they stayed in place until May unless the county and club deemed conditions didn't warrent them.

The standard Winter Rules period runs to the end of April so there is no need yet to seek an extension from county.

The permission to use a DMD is in fact a Local Rule.

There is a substantive rule for embedded ball in closely mown (dropping of course).

Are you really suggesting that Preferred Lies operates all year in perfect conditions? What happened to the earliest Rule, play it as it lies that you alluded to? Players will be wanting carpeted fairways next.

Remember, the ROG cover the whole world, not just soggy England & Wales. In most places, embedded balls are never encountered in the rough and in many not even on the fairway. I've never encountered any on links courses.

The exceptions to 'play it as it lies' should be for exceptional circumstances.

I have indeed experienced an "embedded" ball in the rough on a links course in Scotland but that had more to do with the charming deposits of grazing cattle than the weather conditions.

It might be of interest to know there is another, underutilised, local rule permitting a player to clean a mud laden ball.

Cleaning Ball Conditions, such as extreme wetness causing significant amounts of mud to adhere to the ball, may be such that permission to lift, clean and replace the ball would be appropriate. In these circumstances, the following Local Rule is recommended:

"(Specify area) a ball may be lifted, cleaned and replaced without penalty.

Note: The position of the ball must be marked before it is lifted under this Local Rule

The problem arises with the word 'replaces'. Although we all know what the word means, it is surprising (really?) how many balls suddenly appear above the grass line 2" from a divot hole.

In New Zealand where you have to water fairways to stop the grass burning off you'd often find areas where the water gathered off them and a ball would plug in it, although do have to say in 6 years of playing only happened twice to me
