Plugged Lie

In New Zealand where you have to water fairways to stop the grass burning off you'd often find areas where the water gathered off them and a ball would plug in it, although do have to say in 6 years of playing only happened twice to me :(

As the club would know about it they would of course introduce the local rule ;)

Only around the fringe of the green, We are still in preferred lies in the fairway at our club.

I had been picking repairing and placing but I just wanted other peoples opinion and the correct ruling.

You should have been lifting, (cleaning if you wish) and dropping as near as possible to the pitch mark,
You don't need to mark but you can't repair the pitch mark before you drop and have made your stroke.
If the ball falls back in the pitch mark, drop again.

Where is that laid down? Ours have always run 1st October-31st March

From England Golf website:

[h=2]Can a competition be qualifying if we are using preferred lies?[/h]Medal Play conditions will apply not withstanding the application of a Local Rule for preferred lies during the period from 1st October to 30th April. Preferred lies may be used during that period but are not mandatory upon clubs during any part thereof. Outside that period Medal Play conditions will not apply if preferred lies are in operation unless the consent of the Union or Area Authority has first been obtained.

Indeed they did we had local rule virtually all year on the closely mown areas , alas not the rough just off the fairways :) If only you could design a sprinkler than threw water to fairway edges :D

Am I right in thinking that if the ball plugged in a closely mown area (e.g. fringe of the green) then you must not repair the plug mark until after you have played your shot?

What's the position if 'embedded' on the Green? - Replace.

Yes. But it's not the same rule. The Embedded Ball rule does not apply on the green.

It is 16-1b. Lifting and Cleaning Ball A ball on the putting green may be lifted and, if desired, cleaned. The position of the ball must be marked before it is lifted and the ball must be replaced (see Rule 20-1).

In this case the pitch mark may be repaired before the ball is replaced.

Played yesterday and today, A couple of my approach shots were slightly long and just caught the back fringe of the green but with it being quite wet the ball just plugged. What is the rule? because the ball is submerged into the ground with no way of making contact with the ball? Or is it just the same as it would be in a bunker?

Cheers

After reading all the above, I hope you have spotted that if Preferred Lies are on, you had a choice.

You could have simply preferred your lie within the 6" or you could have proceeded under the embedded rule and then used the preferred lie rule.

There is a substantive rule for embedded ball in closely mown (dropping of course).

Are you really suggesting that Preferred Lies operates all year in perfect conditions? What happened to the earliest Rule, play it as it lies that you alluded to? Players will be wanting carpeted fairways next.

Remember, the ROG cover the whole world, not just soggy England & Wales. In most places, embedded balls are never encountered in the rough and in many not even on the fairway. I've never encountered any on links courses.

The exceptions to 'play it as it lies' should be for exceptional circumstances.

Wasn't suggesting preferred lies, just for the embedded balls! I appreciate that it wouldn't affect many countries, but if it wouldn't affect them, it won't make a difference?

I don't think the RBs had it mind but as there is no requirement to have anyone to verify his actions (a la 12-2 & 5-3), it can be tempting to ......

If it was the norm, fellow competitors would get very blasé about what is going on.

But if it only affects a few why bother?
