Playing to your handicap..how often?

I've only been a member for this year and played 6 competition rounds so far - the first five were all over my handicap (although I was lucky to avoid a +0.1 on one of them because me and my playing partner were the only two to play on the Sunday and I got one more point than him!) and the most recent one I finally played exactly to my handicap. So not even had a cut yet!

I'm sure GM published an article on this a while back and if my memory serves me right, I think on average it was between 1 in 4-5 rounds.

Since August last year I've played 16 qualifiers

13 x 0.1
2 x buffer
1 x 0.1 cut

I've played 70 social rounds this year

Played to handicap or below 24 times, around buffer 10 times, the 36 would have been over buffer zone if a comp round. Although played 20 new courses so that probably is some of it

I've played 3 comp rounds (now work weekends)

1, cut, 1 buffer, 1 +0.1

In the last season and a half i've had 8 cuts, 4 buffers and 12 0.1s. Not sure if this is indicative of a standard cat 2 golfer or not ? Playing to or below my handicap 50 % of the time.

Out of 18 comps of all formats, I have been in the buffer zone 8 times, with two cuts. Been an up and down season so far when it has been bad it has been woeful. When it has been good it has been fine margins to becoming brilliant.

Here's a tale of misery to offset the number of players who play quite regularly to handicap.

2015, started with 8 handicap, 16 qualifiers, no cuts, 1 buffer, 15 x 0.1s, ended with handicap of 10
2016, started with handicap of 10, 17 qualifiers, one cut of 0.4, three buffers, 13 x 0.1s, ended with handicap of 11
2017, started with handicap of 10, 6 qualifiers to date, no cuts, no buffers, 6 x 0.1s

In summary; 39 qualifiers, one cut, four buffers and 34 x 0.1s

I'm now sitting on 11.4, one more dismal round and I'll be playing off 12, that will be four shots back in less than three years, it's a wonder I still have any motivation left to go out and play.
