Playing Ball from OOB

This is a hypothetical question, not an actual incident.

If a player doesn't realise her ball is lying OOB until after she has played it what would the ruling be? 2 shot penalty for playing the wrong ball? No penalty as technically the ball wasn't on the course? Or something else?

i.e. She plays a shot from OOB but realises her mistake before playing the next shot.

Yes it's a wrong ball, she has a 2 stroke penalty and must correct ie play again under 27-1

And just to add that the stroke(s) made at the wrong ball don't /won't count. So you'd be back where you hit the original with a 2 stroke penalty plus S&D.
