I have played over here as a single golfer and joint other players and its ok, sometimes a laugh, but has anybody done it abroad like in Turkey? if so have you joined uk players or other country golf players?, just seems a bit daunting , as they will always tend to make a 4 ball up

I played on my own in Spain and it wasn't a problem other than terminally slow pace of play ahead but once I got through a few groups it was ok.

Also in USA but I ended up joining an American guy for a few holes. Again no problem - they're quite happy to take your money!

Played on my own in Portugal. Was given a tee with two other individuals. Both happened to be Irish and we enjoyed a fantastic round of golf. I'm sure the course would be happy to ensure that you are partnered with other english speaking players.

I've been put in 4 balls when ever I've booked a tee time on my own in the US. And in all occasions my playing partners have been very good company and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

I once lucked out in Vegas as I got put with one bloke and 2 women, and one of the woman was smoking hot, and as I heard afterwards, had a bit of a thing for good golfers. Suffice to say once she saw my swing I got no action. Still, they were great company and she was by far the best looking person l've had sat next to me in a golf buggy.

So I say go for it. You'll more than likely end up with some fat accountant from Bloxwich, but you never know.;)

I always book as a single when im in the US and have been paired up with some americans who were great, playing mulligans the lot. I holed my second shot on one hole from 105 yards and the guys I played with were loving it, high 5's the lot.

Yes they do like their mulligans don't they, and are a lot less hung up with some of the rules. But then again I kind of like approach myself.

Not sure about turkey - which is getting into golf very seriously - but in France (Les Bordes) it was no problem.

I just mentioned an approximate time and was paired up with another single twice and a 3-some once.

went to mauritus with the missus but only me golfing, joined up with all sorts mostly english, and a bonus of a sweedish girl , that was nice

Playing alone is fine so long as you don't have 4 Germans ahead. I played Vilamoura Old alone, got through a group on the 3rd and was round in about 2 hours. I have also had the experience of playing 9 holes alone in about an hour then giving up after spending 25 minutes on the 10th behind 2 4 balls of, well you know who.

Played in the US a bit as a single, mainly Scottsdale. I used to tee of really early to avoid the heat so quite often I was first out so just zoomed round by myself. Got paired up a few times, it was always a great laugh.

I was a bit apprehensive at first but everyone I played with was really friendly and easy going.

Was put with a young Spanish touring pro when in the Algarve one year, long time ago can't remember his name. He was only playing 9 holes as he had to nip off to catch a flight somewhere.
Again in the Algarve we were a 3 ball and had a german guy put with us, who's wife walked around with him filming everything. He made a birdie on one hole on the front 9 and treated us to a "birdie beer". Quite a decent bloke but a bit of a bandit off the handicap he told us he was playing. His wife was a bit of all right though. Tight shorts and a lovely pair of threepennies.

I had to say I genuinely enjoyed playing with Americans, good fun and don't take life too seriously. I've played with lawyers, sales reps and even played with a professional ten pin bowler.

I do think the Americans get a bit of a bad rap. In the most part all the ones I've met over there and played with have been good down to earth folks.

I played one day with an ex Microsoft Board member who was now retired, he was 43, and his friend, a CEO of another technology company. Both of them absolutely minted. But you wouldn't know it, they were just a couple of guys out playing golf.

The next day I played with a couple of guys who used to be at college together, both in their early thirties. One was now a gold trader and his friend worked construction. He was covered from head to toe in tattoos, long hair and goatee dressed in black shorts and a black tee shirt, not your usual sight on a golf course, but he struck the ball pretty well. Probably had the best laugh with them, they were just ripping the p*** out of each other all the way round, it was hilarious.

I've been lucky enough to play golf in Dubai, Maderia, the US, Thailand and South Africa (lucky in that the wife lets me play when we're on hols) and each time have been paired up with great company. I got invited to play in the South African National Welders Association golf competition once, which was hilarious!

Maybe I've been fortunate, but I have no problem being paired up on a course. I've played with Germans, Dutch, Swedish, French, Japanese, Koreans, Irish, Americans, South Africans and Czechs and found it a rewarding experience each and every time.

Go for it!

Played a few places abroad. Played on my own in Turkey, mainly as I like getting out early and I guess the golfing groups out there want a few beers the night before so a bit of a later start. Other places though I have been paired up with others which has been fine. Played with a Spanish couple in Spain who didn't speak much English but still tried to be friendly through out the game, as well as English and German players. Also been paired with others in Mauritius, Florida and the Bahamas. Only once did I have a bit of an issue with a older member and his mate in the Bahamas. He quite clearly didn't want someone else joining them but his mate seemed a little embarrassed and made sure to go out of his way to be friendly. Most people seem to realise you are on holiday, want a relaxing game and make sure it is very light hearted.

I've played in Florida, buenos aires, new Zealand, Ireland, norn ireland, and all through the UK, and always been paired up minimum. Always enjoyed it, what ever the skill level of my partners. It's one of the fun aspects of holiday golf. I've played with 40 odd handicappers, and plus 2 handicappers, and always had a laugh. (little tip here, don't play guys off plus two off the tiger tees, you are going to lose).

Only place that it's an issue is Penha Longa, where they just don't seem to get it. I guess Portugal is a no for the single golfer.

Last time we were in spain me and the old man were paired up with a finnish couple. i learnt my only finnish hyvää kuula (good ball)

they didnt speak much english

and i now only speak two words of finnish ;)

They should have taught you "kietos" (probably not spelled like that, but phoenetically it's accurate), which means "thank you".

You've now got 3 words, Heidi! :D
