Play to your capabilities!

Would still give it a go and then if it doesn't come off look to get the shots back somewhere else - if there is a gap or a slight chance I can pull it off then I give it a crack. And enjoy the aftermath - what's the worst that can happen ?

When I'm stuck in trees now, I always chip out the safest and easiest way possible. I do that now, after reading many threads in here about course mgmt. and wanting to lower my HC.

But more over I do the safe shot after reading PNwokingham's thread about the ball hitting him in the eye after going for the shot out the trees, what's the worst that can happen? Ask PNWokhnham.

I know what the objective is but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy myself whilst trying to do it

Trying to miracle shot is also trying to play the hole in the less amount of shots possible

I'd have enjoyed saving my par much more.

Anyway, feel free to ignore Mr Nicklaus' advice, you contrary fellow, you! ;)

Whilst it's awful what has happened to Paul it shouldn't stop people playing the game aggressively - I have seen players hit by balls from opposite fairways etc - some times things just can't be avoided

It's golf - enjoy yourself and if it involves trying miracle shots then give it a crack - the buzz of it coming off will beat anything

Nicklaus played the game for a living - it's a hobby for us - if we have a poor score then our life doesn't change

Bet you would have enjoyed pulling the shot of more and getting a birdie

<deep sigh>

The entire point of this thread is that I am not capable of pulling that shot off and was a total idiot for trying it during a difficult competition that I was keen to do well in!

Interesting Post, i've always had a reputation as being really aggresive but as i have got older i am learning to think more about what i do. Par 4's that are about 320 and reachable i will often lay up on now etc etc.

However, the key is knowing when to pull the trigger. At the weekend i had 255 left on a par 5 with a perfect lie, I would have been a fool not to have a go.

And I just agreed with BW who said its fun to give those shots a go

If you just wanted to make a statement without people responding then should have said so - not sure what it is that I have said that is such an issue ?!

Thanks Bob. Is it OK with you if I practise it first or should I just try it when I get out of position during the Scottish Ladies?

:D

Obviously but you've (hopefully) learned that lesson now.
That's what bounce games are for or when you're 2 down with 3 to play.
Never try and play a shot in medal that you cant hit twice in a row

Same question Bob - why not try it ?

Playing within your capabilities is a lot like my three goals method game plan but more easily applied to a wider handicap range.

The 3GM is very much for high handicapper and will help people with basic ability but little concept iof application of that ability to build a score

Oh is that what you were doing? I thought you were badgering me after every post until I agreed with you. You know, like you do with someone on every thread. Took quite a few before I got exasperated with you, I thought I was doing well.

There was me thinking I was just replying to your posts that you posted in reply to me

if ive a card in my hand its boring golf for me every time, get back in play and have a chance at saving par or at worst bogey. bounce game or match play if i was down and needed to do something special, id try anything.

way my game is at the moment its the easy bread and butter shots im struggling with;)

I find it's largely down to the situation, the possibilities of pulling off the shot and my mindset on the day.

But far too often I take on the Seve/Hollywood shot - it's amazing how often it works, but totally different to how I planned it:mad:

In a scratch comp', early on in the day, I'd definitely try to fight the demons and play the sensible shot!

Surely its all down to what's at stake, I know golf isn't life or death, but a bit of thought needs to come into it. I might try something early on in the round that I wouldn't try near the end if I had a good card going.

I'm all for aggressive but the 'when in doubt give it a clout' mentality doesn't come in to it as much these days, after all I'm only playing for fun and to lower my HC, not to win several hundred thousand.

I would have to go with the OP here, when you only have 4 shots to play with you don't want to try miracle shots in the middle of a competition, especially not a 36 hole.
