Play to your capabilities!

Handicap on the line with card and pencil in hand why would I take on a shot I've rarely played. definitely not practiced and if I don't pull it off will put me in trouble and compromise my score on the hole? Thats just a stupid decision and something I've worked hard to eradicate. At my level bogey is still my friend and sometimes you have to take your medicine and move on.

In a roll up though with maybe a princely £3 on the line then of course I'd consider it especially if I wasn't going too well and wanted to have some fun. For me its' about knowing when to take a risky shot, not even the full blown Hollywood shot, and when to swallow pride and play the percentages

how much is on the line in your medal rounds then? still only a fun game of golf for us amateurs, live a little and take the tough shot on every now and again :)

:whoo:

Its only .1 at the end of the day if it goes horrible - but even then can still fight back to get a good score.

But why? I struggle much of the time to hit the buffer, as I should as handicaps aren't to be played to every time. Why then risk an extra two or three shots on the score to play one fanciful shot that probably won't come off. And contrary to popular belief you can still have fun trying to play properly even as a struggling handicap golfer. You do it your way and I'll do it mine

lighten up homer its supposed to be fun, keep chipping out backwards and shooting net 80+ is fun? each to their own i guess

What difference does it make to you how I do it. Concentrate on your own game. Contrary to popular belief I still had fun despite shooting a net 82 at the weekend. Played with two cracking lads and great banter before during and after. As for LP and it's only 0.1 so what. I'm aware of that but still don't see the merit in playing a shot that has 1% of coming off and probably won't actually make an iota to the score anyway but has the potential to add another two or three shots onto the final tally

My personal favourites are the Par 5's when you've smashed a drive down the middle leaving <250 yards to the green... Mmmmmm, do I go for it, or do I lay up and take the likely par? Sod that, I'm pulling the 1 Hybrid and I'm smashing it....

That feeling when the ball rolls on to the green, up to the pin.. Your PP's want to be you, women want to be with you, you can picture everyone in the bar hanging rapt at your tales of derring do..... Nothing better in the World... Except maybe World Peace or other boring guff...

unless it's a big carry over a hazard then going for the green in that situation is almost a no pressure shot. Nail it and you're on the green , don't and you've laid up and lost nothing.

Well..... an eagle 2!!! :whoo:

But no, the point is don't attempt shots you have no reason to think you can pull off.

That's not the same as going for it on a long carry when you know you are capable, provided you get a good strike. More akin to trying to carry it 250 yards over water with a three wood you know you've never hit that distance in your life.

I think the secret is what format/position your in.

Matchplay - don't give them an easy win on a hole, make them earn it. OR if their on the green and on a shot - what the hell go for it.

Stableford - how is your point going, can you get 3 points (cloming off), or more likely blob if it doesn't.

Medal - You don't need telling, especially if its the 17,18th.

I'm biding my time with the cuts. Lulling you into a true sense of security.

After 89, 91 and 88 in the first 3 comps I was just happy to buffer last weekend!

Gary, you've just made me feel a lot happier, similar scores to me in recent rounds.

Sorry for your pain, but eased mine slightly.;)
