Plan B

If EFTA is that good then why have countries left to join the EU and countries still continue yo leave - Norway I believe see trying

Er...'to join the EU' is exactly the reason! EU membership and EFTA membership is mutually exclusive.

There are only 4 current members of EFTA.

Norway has had 2 referendums over whether to join the EU, and thus leave the EFTA (1973, 1995), and it has been a 'No' both times!

And it's a wonder how so many who lambasted Salmond and the YES campaign for not having a Plan B on currency (to their liking) at the same time will be happy to roll along with an EU OUT campaign not saying what life would be like and arrangements that would be in place having left the EU. If such a referendum come about I am sure we'll hear lots of 'it'll be alright' 'the EU will take a pragmatic view' coming from the OUT campaign.

And would OUT be out for ever? Unlike Independence I don't see why it should/would be. But if the UK did ever leave and then want to return you can be sure that one of the conditions of entry would be that the UK adopt the Euro. Now how many OUTista Eurosceptics would fancy that idea?

Hopefully it won't come to a referendum - and even if it did I expect the business and financial lobby to stay in to be way too strong.

I hope you are not referring to me. Although I am a supporter of the UK I was quite happy for Scotland to make their own minds up on what they wanted.

On the EU, I never wanted us to join it in the first place and my fears of it becoming a suffocating security blanket that saps our self determination has been released.

People that feel its in our best interest are entitled to their opinion and somehow I would like to be convinced that staying is the best way forward. Alas I am far from being convinced of that.

Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of the UK leaving the EU, I can't believe we stay in a 'club' where the accounts haven't been signed off by the auditors for donkey's years. If the Treasurer at your golf club couldn't produce an audited balance sheet, what would happen?

Please can you show some evidence that Norway is trying to leave?

Poor grammar - should read - keep trying

But Iceland is in negotiations to join EU

And Switzerlands application is on hold at the moment

Er...No it's not!!!

Switzerland is unlikely to resurrect any application. The 'Yes to Europe' referendum was soundly rejected - over 75% against!

And Socket's question was about Norway.

Ok let me rephrase

Iceland has been in negotiations since 2010 and currently waiting results of a referendum to continue membership application

And let me correct your misconception!

Iceland was in negotiation to join EU, but no longer is.

In September 2013 Iceland disbanded its accession team, thus suspending joining the EU.

There is no referendum planned!

Now, how about Socket's question about Norway!

But even that is incorrect. I have asked you previously to supply evidence of this, you seem to keep dodging the question.

Does this mean you were wrong?

Norway have tried to leave EFTA twice now - ie they keep trying to leave EFTA

So to summarise

I would not like to see the country I live leave to go to an organisation

Which has 4 countries involved - 3 who over the years have looked to leave and could possibly look to leave again in the future and another country that basically follows one of the others like a lost lamb

seems like a lot of off topic bickering goes on in these forums- same people?

Back on topic, Cameron doesnt need a back up plan in my view, he is confident we wont leave and he will have answers to key areas of concern answered before it ever reaches that possibility

Notwithstanding that Norway aren't - and never were - actually trying to leave EFTA as such, but were considering whether to join the EU - a consequence of which would be leaving EFTA....

You are actually still on 'Plan A' - whether to remain in the EU.

'Plan B' is about what could/should happen if the referendum result is a 'leave the EU'. Joining EFTA would be an obvious step to take imo. but, as I have already posted, for anyone determined to remain in EU (as Cameron is/Tories are), providing an alternative (Plan B) does not make sense!
