Off to the historic dockyard at Chatham tomorrow followed by a trip round a whisky distillery just up the road.

Coming back via Victoria & Marylebone and looking for somewhere to nosebag close to Victoria or Marylebone / Baker Street

Early evening

Over to those in the know
Thanks in advance

You will need more than a day for the Dockyard
What sort of food are you thinking of, and do I assume a train trip is upcomming to get there?
;)

Yes Aylesbury to Marylebone, Bakerloo to Oxford Circus, Victoria line to Victoria, Victoria to Chatham

Reverse for the return journey.
Can break the journey at either Victoria or Marylebone.

We eat anything.

Or we hit Chinatown and gorge ourselves at one of the “all you can eat” places….. like a challenge Me 😎

Im told by a good friend, some of the China Town eateries are really very good.
I hope you're looking to get the fast train from Victoria to Chatham, which is 40 mins. Tge slow one is about 1hr 20

Why not eat at the dockyard, if you’re doing the dockyard experience and whiskey I assume that will be the copper yard distillery. Literally walk out of there and its 100yards to the restaurants at the dockside centre.

There’s a couple decent little restaurants or you could just eat in the Ship and Trades pub right there get a nice bit of grub and a pint before heading back to the delights of Chatham Train station.

Just avoid the Alexandra hotel pub that is literally a roundabout and lethal coming out of it half cut into traffic 🤣

Make sure you get a picture of the Waghorn statue as well complete with his permanent traffic cone head wear 👍

If you want all you can eat could head up the even dodgier end of Chatham high st to Confucius it looks an absolute dive from the outside but the food is top notch, really clean inside and staff are lovely !

Or divert off the train at Rochester many good places to eat there before hopping back on to Victoria.

You’re actually making me feel nostalgic for where I grew up! It’s not a great town but it is home ☺️

Alternatively food at Victoria the Wetherspoons in the station is decent for cheap and cheerful but just go to china town the foods class and decent prices. As BM says get the fast train though so your only stops are Bromley South, Rochester and Chatham. Otherwise the slow train though literally goes down the other line and you’ll be atopping at every single station known to man.

I work near Victoria and all our small work group meals have been in that area for years. Most of the restaurants are a bit 💩. The chain ones are the same as they are anywhere else, but a bit worse.
If you're set on Victoria and just want fuel I'd get on the Greene King website and pick one of their nearby pubs.
From what you've said, I'd go for Chinatown.

Spoons?
Spoons?
I’d have extreme difficulty dragging my beloved into a spoons.

Looks like china town it is

The whisky tour is 3-4:30 so should be back at Chatham station by 5 ish.

Bit early for din dins in Chatham

👍

Last time I went, your ticket was valid for a year. You definitely need more than 1 sat to see it all.
Its mad that I never made use of it as I can see the covered slipway from the back bedroom window.

Trust me once you have been through Chatham station and town centre you and your beloved will think Spoons is upmarket !

Sounds like a bit of a whirlwind day you won’t see all the Dockyard has to offer in that time as well as completing your Whiskey tour. It’s actually a fascinating place and won’t let you down.

Chinatown never disappoints for food though 👌

So which is worse
Chatham or Gravesend?
Gravesend is a dive! Chatham literally invented the CHAV, high street is horrendous, the local clientele is a delight and most people avoid the town centre like the plague these days.

That said there is a lot of money going into the surrounding areas to improve it, dockside, the docks and St Mary island are all up and coming and lovely.

Chatham even has its own famous celebrity “Billy the Quid” man was a legend in our lifetime. But like I said it’s home and as rough as some bits can be I love it.

But which is worse Gravesend or Chatham! These days you’d be hard pushed to chose but like I say Chatham has been having a rejuvenation in recent years especially around the docks some lovely places to live round there.

Its all subjective. Ive lived in the Medway Towns all my life. If isbt perfect, but then it's not the worst.
It does however have lots of history.
For example, on your way to the Dockyard uou pass Fort Amhurst which is Napoleon'ic defences with its tunnels and ramparts.

Also well worth a visit. The Royal Engineers museum has some decent bits in it as well.

For all its faults Chatham will always be home to me, grew up there , schooled there , learnt to play golf up the road and joined the Army at the careers centre on dock road.

I started my RAF entrance process there as well. I never made it past the last test though.
Went to Chatham Tech, which used to supply most Dockyard apprentices. I would have been in the last years intake if I had accepted it.
Back then, the Medway Towns were one of the most violent places to live but its miles better now.

Or as John Bishop said at his evening performance in the Central Hall after his look around Chatham after his afternoon show..he didn't realise tracksuits could be got in large a size.

If you aren't on a budget, then the Orrery at 55 Marylebone High Street is where i would head. It's probably my favourite restaurant - fabulous service, great menu (no longer has a Michelin star but you can't really tell!). Worth it if its a special occasion.
