After trying the latest Titleist, TM, Callaway, Nike drivers I tried an old Ping G5 at the range today and it was very good.
So basically I know nothing about Ping woods so any advice on G5, G10 etc woods and their decent stiff shafts from users would be appreciated as an older Ping driver might be exactly what I need.

DV,
I know people that still use the Ping G 5 series wood and irons.....
The thing with Ping is that they Last...................Period........

I wouldnt imagine that there is a huge difference between the 5,10,15,and 20 series clubs.....

Numerous people have said that....Iv never hit the G5's but i have hit the 10's and the G15's and they are very good....
I currently use i15's and find them better than the G series but thats just me....I seem to have found a shaft in Pings own brand that suits my swing speed and it'll be a while before they leave my bag....They are stiff shafts in my woods and my irons have the AWT Stiff steel shafts as well.....

I think that Ethan may know more on the shafts but i remember him telling me one day that they play a little softer in flex than marked.

I tried out a few of the new offerings at a PIng demo day recently and compared to them all, my G5 was still the longest and straightest.
Graphalloy red stiff 9 deg :)

thanks fellas, its all down to the shaft I suppose. The G5 and i15 heads look a little more pleasing to my eye as I prefer traditional pear shape.

I need a light (60-65g) but stiff/stable shaft (the Graffaloy Prolaunch red on my old Titleist 907D2 felt dead and heavy, is the one on the G5 different do you know?)

Its going to be difficult to try these before buying I think so need to get it pretty close to what I need.

I have 2 G10's one with a Prolaunch red reg and the other the normal stiff Ping shaft in a stiff. I also have a Titleist 912 D2 with a regular Diamana shaft and I think i will be replacing the D2 with the bog standard G10. It was a little longer but it seems it was very easy to hit! So much so I was thinking about a G20....i tried out a G15 some time ago and just could not get it to go except straight right!

That's because you put an extra-long shaft in it and never take it out of its bag - no wonder it's still straight and not been bent !

The question of whether clubs last is an odd one. Clubs don't deteriorate (much) with use - a club which is good today will remain good tomorrow. Now, the model may be updated with one which is technologically or cosmetically better, but that doesn't change whether the older one is good or not. I think the G5 was a good driver, and remains a good driver, and subsequent model updates have not added a great deal. Ping stock shafts, especially in the G (and K series) come up fairly soft. Bob's Graf PL Red is a rather different beast, and is a shaft well liked by those who want a stout low launch shaft. A true 9 degree loft and a PL Red would be too much club for most of us around here. Not V Easy to hit at all, you might say.

I have a Ping G2 Driver with Grafolloy blue shaft, best driver i have ever had

Had G10 / G15 but nothing as good as the G2 which in its day was one of the best

The great thing is they are cheap now and will last ages

The important point is the shaft get a Blue reg or red stiff Prolaunch grafolloy in an old ping G2 or G5

My PL graffaloy red was a dead piece of wood, I wonder if the Ping PL red was different to the Titleist? If it is then def worth me seeking it out

I played the Aldila NV (green one) in the Ping Woods I had and always found it an excellent shaft, very stable and reasonable light. Thinking of getting one for the R11 but the green/white combo might be a little too offputting!!

Stil using G5 driver 3 woods .. still hitting it very well so it will be stayin in the bag .. also has the green Aldila shaft . I know flip all bout shafts or flex or any of that , but it goes a good whack & i can (mostly) control the ball flight with it

Not hugely useful as I only have the stock regular shaft but my G15 (12 degree) is my favourite club and as a result (or perhaps reciprocally) the strongest part of my game. Its a great club, if I hit a bad one with it its all me, and I've gotten away with a few dodgy ones believe me, its gained me at least 80 yards....

of course I was upgrading from a 20+ year old Slazenger Californian 3 wood (oh yeah!) ;)

Thanks curls for the pm, just missed that one.

Blade and SHW that green aldila shaft sounds promising, do you know it's weight and if it's a made for shaft, do Ping use it in other drivers as well?

For the money I think I'll just buy one off evilbay, a G5 9degree with green aldila stiff. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for all the input, Bob you know a lot about Ping and the G5, anything to add?

As far as I know it was an original Aldila shaft not a 'made for' Ping although I will wait to stand corrected :o

I had the NV 65 in a G2 driver and 3 wood - think they only used this shaft in the G2 and G5 model as standard.

Here are the stats

I've never got on with the Aldila shafts, always had the Graphalloy but if it suits you what have you got to lose?
If it doesn't suit, stick it back on ebay
