Hawkeye really agree with what you've just said, in fact with what a lot of people have said. I suppose it's interesting that on a separate thread people were saying they would rather have an extra wedge than extra yards, but the more I've read and listened the less I think the lob will add to my game at the moment.

I do spend the vast majority of my practice time on my putting and wedge play but I haven't mastered the 3 I've got yet so the lob will have to wait until I do that.

Strange how this thread has evolved...thank you all for your comments (and the genuine concern you all have for my game development) and returning to the original thread intention

I LOVE PING :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I recently scrapped my Vokeys in favour of Ping Tour-W wedges and I think they are great, much better than the Vokeys for me because they go the right distance. If I wanted to chip 30yds with my Vokeys I used to have to put a 40yd swing on it... with the Pings they just see to go the distance I want, without forcing them.

I use a 50° for anything of substance, 54° from around 50yds or closer and a 58° for delicate shots and bunkers.
Even with the new grooves they seem to get a heap of checkspin on a Srixon Z-star.

Hi James, yeah I have to plead guilty to just getting the Vokeys and not trying other brands but given the results you are getting with the new grooves that's really useful to know.

I'm going to take the advice offered on here to leave things as they are for a couple of months and then depending on how things are going maybe going for a fitting..

Cheers

A fine move JustOneUK, the Tour-W is an awesome wedge. I keep looking for and having to talk myself of using mine at the wrong time.

I'll be changing the 60deg soon and the 56 will follow as soon as I can afford it.

you must have the longest arms ever a forty yard swing?

I've just sat and read the whole thread from start to end.

Too much analysis and technobable. Just get out there and play golf, that's what it's all about after all.

With a quarter of the season already gone, I'd expect some inroads into that 28 handicap by now.

Get out there and hit the thing

:)

I'm confused (which is not difficult)
You have a PW and a Sw but you dont have any wedges?

Bob, most golfers have a pitching wedge and sand iron don't they? I meant lob and gap wedges with all the different degrees. Most high handicappers will lose more shots than they will gain with said clubs surely? :)

Golfmmad.

Lose more shots with a GW? intriguing.....

Everyone I play with seems to carry a GW, it's the only sensible answer to the manufacturers obsession with de-lofting irons. I hadn't noticed any mysterious goings on with rubbish players hitting GW shots.....but I have noticed lots of utter silliness with 60 and 64 degree clubs.

I am working on it, honest ;) my shorter game is significantly improved but without a reliable go to club from the tee I struggle on the longer holes. On an average round I'll score between +6 & +10 on the shortest 9 holes and about +30 on the other 9. 3 wood is on it's way and it's practice, practice, practice.

I am playing my first medal next weekend and will play 2 in July to give me an official starting handicap. In my defence I have only been playing 9 months and 3 of those were snow affected.

Hope I can post some breakthrough news soon. ;)

Only started this thread to say I liked Ping :D

I recently obtained a 64 deg lob wedge to see how I got on with it. I've had plenty of thins and found that it's not great for delicate little chip and runs, but from around 60 yards I can take a fairly full swing (I angle the shaft forwards over the ball) and it goes nicely more often than not.

I have got a SW as part of my irons, but found that the bounce was a little too much, hence the investment in a Lob Wedge. Anyway, at only £8 from Sports Direct (Dunlop...) it's not exactly a big waste of money if it turns out to be superfluous.

I too don't have an official handicap, and only stepped up from par 3 courses to normal length last week!

I'm with RGDave on this. As most PW's are the same loft as a nine iron was even 5 years ago, there has become an almost imperative need to bridge the gap between the 45-48 degrees of a PW and the standard 56 of most SW. The GW has become a great club in my armoury and I can play a multitude of shots with it and with confidence. I have a 58 wedge for bunkers and more delicate shots.

I have played around with a 52, 56 and 60 wedge combo for a couple of seasons and whilst there are rounds where I've chipped and played bunker shots really well, there are others where duffed LW's and almost too much choice have cost me shots and I usually revert to my normal set up

Me too, GW is a must. LW is a potential disaster. I use my LW a lot but as I've already said, anything other than a perfect lie I don't use it.
