Don't get me started on fire men or bin men. Any job where there is a waiting list to join up is over paid. No questions. Any job where you can have another job simultaneously, ditto. I have ex firemen mates who have retired aged 45. No other job on the planet enbles you to do this.

If he retired at 45 then it was because he went on an ill health pension. That avenue is very much closed these days as they changed it so you now have to go and work as a desk jockey or spend the rest of your days putting up smoke alarms for vulnerable households.

As for overpaid , I hardly think so , how much would you like to be paid to drag someone out of a burning building , or to find them not so lucky and looking like a big joint on a bar-b-q. How much would you want to be paid to stand around for 4 hours next to a car full of a dead family (parents and kids) while the police do their investigation. You then get to spend the next 2 hours trying to cut the car away from their poor litle bodies. Thats ok though cos at least I can stand there and think of that massive salary i'm getting.....idiot :D

Very good point jammydodger. it must be an awful job to do in situations you have described for them they go in the same bracket a our soldiers, risk there lives for us and IMO they canny be paid enuff.

I disagree, I think if your in the army you should be prepared to die, and if you're a fireman etc. you should be prepared to see people die. We do have a choice in what we do and I don't see why the added danger or emotional attatchment should command higher earnings or other bonuses.

True, they do know the risks but they do a bloody tough job that entitles them to better wages IMO. They do a better job than footballers yet they are on 100 grand a Week whos the bigger heroes???

I have done both jobs and went into both with my eyes wide open. I accepted the dangers/possibilities before I joined. What I get paid to me is irrelevant , i've never been ruled by the lure of the greenback.

Nobody loves squaddies in peacetime (drunken , testosterone fuelled yobs i've heard used). Come wartime and suddenly all those 'gobby' civvies are all over them with praise. You cant have it both ways and its easy to decry other people when sitting in your comfy chairs shuffling paper around.

As for being a Fireman its another job where everyones happy to see you when the sh!t hits the fan. Not many Firemen lived past pension age back in the 60's/70's cos the gear they used didnt stop them breathing in all the smoke etc hence the need for a decent pension. This has been addressed a few years ago and anyone joining in the last few years has a very different pension then those who joined years ago. Yes we see the dead, burnt, decapitaed, smashed up,distraught etc but thats the job , what we dont appreciate is people in the dark who have no idea of what theyre talking about mouthing of and comparing us to binmen

I dont express an opinion about the teachers/railway workers/cabin crew etc because I dont know the real story behind the lies youre bound to hear in the media. To form an opinion without both sides of an argument is Sun readers mentality

I still will have to get a job when i retire after 30 years service at 51!!

My heart bleeds.

Welcome to reality. ;)

I think after 30 years as a fireman, Doc knows a bit about reality and saving lives
i would still rather do my public service in the UK than in Afghanistan or Iraq. I have no perks or complaints when i see what those guys and girls have to put up with. Another reason why i'm playing the Help 4 Heros golf day at Luton Hoo in 2 weeks time!! :)

I have the best perks. I get out of bed when I feel like it. I get to watch day-time TV. My money comes into the bank account every month. I have not needed to send a tax return for years.
Of course, at my age, I have been retired for seventeen years.
:D :D

I thought you were going to say you were from Albania

Great stuff Smiffy. :D
