People who don't repair their pitch marks - what's that all about???

I play at a semi-public / members course, so maybe the situation on this is better where it's all members.

But I'm astounded by the amount of people who don't repair their pitch marks on the greens.

What really bugs me is that if people are proficient enough to hit shots that leave a pitch mark (i.e. coming in from quite a height/distance, not a tiddly chip), surely they should have enough respect for the game/course to fix their mark.

I not only fix my own and one other, but (if there's no one behind me or I'll only have to wait at the next tee) will fix several others (sad, I know!).

Sorry, I'm sure everyone on here loves the game enough to tidy up, but do you get much of this problem where you play (ditto, fairway divots!)?

Rant over!

Sadly yes. Even at our Club, a members' club over 120 years old I had to post a notice on the board reminding All Golfers of The 3 R's.

Replace Divots
Rake Bunkers
Repair Pitchmarks

I had hoped that members & visitors would not need this reminder but sadly I was wrong.

First thing I think of when walking onto the green is "where's the pitch mark". I Don't understand people who don't fix them, as I am certain they would be first to complain when the greens started to resemble the moon surface.

Went out on my own yesterday for a couple of extra holes practice, spent more time repairing FRESH pitchmarks than putting! Counted 8 on the front of one green, between the point most people walk on and the flag!

According to the sheet I should be doing this on hole 17 but I do it on every green when I am out as a single.

I think people do not realise that pitch shots and 1st bounces of shots that ping off the back BOTH make pitch marks!

Unbelieveable, isn't it Mickie /all?

I know I'm pretty new to the game, but I think anyone who doesn't take care of the course is NOT a golfer. I don't care how low their handicap is.....a love of the game and respect for the course (and fellow players) is more inportant to me than their prowess.

Jeez, I did say 'rant over'!! I'm off for a cup of PG and a lie down!

Totally agree mate.
Find it at a lot of courses I play, espec recently with the soft ground!.. I tend to try and fix any that I walk past on my way to my ball, just doin my wee bit takes no time.

Thought I'd make my 100th post positive!!......I'm very re-assured by the replies so far (though not surprised in the slightest, as you're a top bunch.....and I'm delighted I joined this forum and get the benefit of your advice and company).

Right, where's that kettle!!

Widespread problem I'm afraid!

I grew up (re Nick Faldo's Junior Masterclass video -not DVD) with the thought that you should walk on to a green and repair your own pitch mark and 1 other, and that if everyone did that eventually you wouldn't need to do the 1 other! In reality I repair any that I see not just those that are on or near my putting line!

It seems to be worse after hollow tining too. Just because the greens aren't great, doesn't mean that pitch marks can be left, but they are, all the time.

People that don't do it are just lazy!!!

But they will be first person to complain about the greens

I always repair mine and one other!

Laziness and\or ignorance is all it can boil down to. We had an issue with moss on our greens at the beginning of last year which everyone moaned about. Our new course manager who inherited the problem spent a lot of time and effort getting rid of it, there was a large amount of work done which closed some of the greens at certain times and everyone knew it was going on. The week after the major work happened, I went for a knock on my own after work, hit my ball to the first green and was stunned to find 5 fresh pitch marks within 2 feet of my ball. I think I repaired 10 or 15 on the first green and I stopped counting after 3 or 4 on the greens that followed. I don't know if I was shocked, angry or felt sorry for the Greens staff but it prompted me to write a letter to the comittee asking them to remind everyone how important repairing pitch marks are. They did act on this and the problem did appear to get better but it hasn't gone completely.

I agree and unfortunately it is a widespread problem, don't think there will be many clubs that can say they don't have this as an issue despite constant reminders.

Worst I've seen was a crate size pitch mark 2 feet from the flag in our captains day, pretty obviously whose it was as there was a nearest the pin prize! I would of given a pitch mark repairer as the prize.

I remember how proud I was when i finally was able to make shots capable of making a pitchmark!
I felt I was a real golfer.

I get a lot of satisfaction from finding my mark and making it all but disappear.
Repairing the second one i find makes me feel I am looking after my course.
The third and the 4th one.... not so much pleasure there.

I was playing a couple of weeks ago and was concerned that my three ball was barely keeping pace with the 4 ball ahead.
Were we slow?
No, it was the additional time I was spending repairing the pitch marks that they had missed / ignored!

And don't get me started on the oiks who think that bunkers rake themselves.
And this at a private members course with hardly any outside visitors?

LOL. Genius!

I've started suggesting to playing partners that they "fix that one over there" while i do this one.

Then they ask if i can borrow my repair fork!

WTF have they been using for the previous 6 holes?
(nothing)

Ditto! For some perverse reason I love to not be able to see my repaired pitchmark...

How very true. One particular group at our Club are the first to moan; last to repair.

When I rarely hit the green, I will always look to repair my pitchmark and any others that I can see. I hate having bobbly greens and unrepaired pitch marks really get my goat. I once shouted at my partner for ignoring the crater he left on my line. He was too busy lining up his birdie putt to take notice of me going for my bogey. He missed the putt, we halved the hole and lost the match. He blames me for putting him off. I blame him for not coming in on the next 5 holes.

Exactly, I am proud to repair a pitch mark, I probably enjoy it more than hitting the shot into the green. However I think it does boil down to ignorance and laziness. I always try to repair my own and 1 other.
