Pens for ball marking and templates?

I use some Stabilo pens that were bought for writing on overhead projector slides.

They fade, but the ball is still identifiable as mine even after a few rounds.

also checking out tesco for the sharpie pens

That's the one couldn't remember the discount price but knew it was cheap.

It does a grand job and the supplied black pen is decent enough if you let them dry fully before playing. Really though you will probably mark up your balls well in advance of a round so they should be dry.

IF you can, get 3 colours. This allows you to mark each ball in a sleeve with a different colour. So if you need to play a provisional after hitting say a Nike 1 with a red mark you can then put a blue marked Nike 1 into play without opening another sleeve or searching in the bag for a different number.

Then if by the law of sod you find both balls side by side you can quickly determine which is the first hit. If you can't determine this but because have the same marking in the same colour then you have to play the next shot as your 4th! Rule 27 Decision 27/11

I've had this happen to me and learnt quickly. Now when I buy a dozen balls I make sure that each sleeve contains different numbers using the following table and colour the number with 3 different pens just in case.

123
234
134
124

Re: Pens for ball marking?

Usually its a case of the ball no longer being in play (at least by me) than the marking rubbing off. It's usally in the early morning dew or after rain that my sharpie marking fade.

Intesting point about numbered balls. I can see it being a logisitcal issue for the manufacturer but wouldn't it be good to just have 4 x sleeves marked 1,2,3 (and may the option to by other consecutive number combos say 4,5,6)
