Hi all. I would really appreciate some help. I am a beginner myself, and I am in the process of organising a golf day for my football club as a fundraiser. We've already got a good deal at a local club in a few weeks' time. The financial side of things is fine. I was hoping to draw on your experiences of what to do with regards to scoring systems, prizes and any other considerations that you think contribute to a really good event.

We will have 40 players, 10 four balls, of varying standards, going off back to back. We're playing 18 holes.

Amongst other things, what is the simplest method for scoring - take the best 3 of the 4? Will players need to submit handicaps? Ideally, I would arrange it so that people can play with their friends, rather than allocate each group to have equal ability.

What are the usual prizes you'd expect - longest drive and nearest the pin?

Really appreciate your input.

If you are going to play in 4 balls, it is best to have a format that keeps things moving along - 2 best scores is pretty quick.

Handicaps- it's up to you.
I personally wouldn't play in an open that didn't want hcp certs, but I would be more relaxed about a charity event.
For charity do's, organisers tend not to insist in hcp certs.
Of course this means you may get more "28" hcps declared than would be expected- you also run the risk of a 4 ball - all mates- running away with first prize by playing 10 under their hcps.
As a fundraiser, you have to decide if you can deal with the complaints if the above happens.

I would have one longest drive, and maybe a couple of nearest the pins.
Ddepending on entry fee, you could also give a best front 9 and best back 9 prize.
Make it clear that it's one prize only per person.

Yep, make it CLEAR as people often forget! Its the best way IMO to make sure everyone has a good day.

I would also suggest a nearest the pin in 2, I like those!

Also a shortest drive doesnt hurt either (usually measured on the 1st)

This is absolutely true so don't knock it. Make sure the bacon rolls on arrival are top notch. Sets the day off on the right note even before anyone sets foot on the course.
