It's that time of the month again when I ask forumers to let me know what they think about a couple of golf-related issues, so here goes with this month's questions...

All responses gratefully received...

Because of Langers history and my crap putting I went Germany and tiddlers :D

Tap ins for my playing partners also......Anything inside 6-8 inches........

I went with Spain as i would be a fitting tribute to "SEVE".......

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

Interesting on the gimmes. We used to be 1-2ft, but we realised that as we're playing for cash some people were being much more generous, and it was often across two groups. So we reverted to teeny tiny tiddler range. A number have been missed from the 1-2ft range since, and it makes for great banter.

Give France a go,its somewhere different,as for gimme's. I politely asked Homer,GM Forum day out,Wed( 10th June) at Ascot for a 10 footer,what do you think his reply was ???? .

Valderama was the Seve tribute.

I think Germany for Langer is a good shout, but he got the captaincy, and what else has Germany really done for golf?

SO, for me Holland, almost as much (they would say more) history of golf than Scotland, I think that deserves recognition.

As does that Dutchy fellas mullet haircut and hoopy polo shirts.

Century's ask was from 6 feet downhill left to right. You should have seen the shoulders sag when there was a deafening silence marking his request.

It depends on the game and who is putting. We've a few guys in our regular groups that you can safely give one footers to all day and a few who are capable of missing from the lip.

I think Spain deserve another crack. Great courses and with the emergence of some new talent in recent years there would be a huge following if several Spaniards made the side.

Other than those on the list I can't think of any other countries that have a course capable of holding such a large scale event. Italy, Sweden etc all have great courses but do they really have the infrastructure to cope.

depends who's putting, I usually get to putt them all out!

went for Germany, Langer and all that, though not sure what courses there are.

love to see it at Les Bordes though doubt it would be suitable for a gallery.

Are there no hotels in Italy?

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

IMO all putts should be finished whatever the format, however to speed up play all putts inside a foot should not be allowed to be marked but putted straight away[unless the ball can be clearly seen to be so dirty it has to be cleaned or a final putt of the tournament by the leader.

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

Normal putter shaft - distance from grip down to top of putter head - circa 18" - easy for each golfer to know if he has/has not, to putt, without an inquest!

Spain...good courses, easy access, good hotels and God willing, Seve accepting the Cup, on our behalf, as a token of all he has stood for in the game.

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

"what range of putt constitutes a 'gimme' in friendly(ish) play?"

Define 'friendly(ish)" :)

Is that one where it doesn't matter if you lose?.... Never heard of it :)

Nb: If it's stableford and he's already blobbed the hole then he can have it from any length.

Affectionately,
Mr Generous.
:D

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

I dont see how you can even put a case forward for france Holland or portugal I have more Ryder cup involvement than the three countries put together, may aswell give it to wales, Doh.

As for give me's, dont give them dont want them, there is nothing worse than some one giving me a putt, the whole point of the game is to get the ball in the hole not near it.

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

If it's a very friendly game, and we want to get round in a reasonable time, then anything inside 2 feet is ok. However normally it depends on who's putting and also what kind of a game we're playing.

For the RC, I opted for Germany in recognition of Langer (with the captaincy as well and thereby going back to the days of Jacklin / Gallagher in terms of more than 1 go?) Other than that, think they all have reasonable shouts for hosting.

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

I would go for portugal only because its one of the 2 countries i have played abroad and think that it would be a great place to have a ryder cup as there are some great courses there.

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

I've gone for France. Not that I particularly like the French but they have quite a few tour pro's and some nice courses.
gimme's,a foot! if pro's can miss from 13",you ain't gettin it!

Re: Opinions wanted - Ryder Cup 2018 & 'Gimmes'

With the service that Langer has given golf and the European Tour as well as the likes of Cejka, Struver and Kaymer. I think Germany deserves the Ryder Cup.

It depends on the borrow on the putt. But it wouldn't be outside 2 feet, that's for sure! Personally, I wouldn't expect to be given anything outside of that distance.
