Open Competitions 2016

I agree some may be pricey, but not all........

Eg Sheringham.....36 holes, free practice round, coffee, bacon roll, lunch and £1000 of vouchers up for grabs. £110 entry fee.

2 qualifying rounds on a great course with a free round and food thrown in......

Sheringham is normally £75 a day so for 3 rounds, that's £112.50 without food, prizes, and the qualifying rounds and everything else that tournament golf has to offer.

I'd argue that is great value.

Personally I don't rate Sheringham that highly so I think that's a bit on the steep side. Some of the club run opens are much better value and I'm not that bothered about OOM's and such like as they tend to be dominated by the people that have the time and money to play the majority of events.

That's fair enough, can't please everyone.

Personally I rated Sheringham very highly. So did lots of other I know. One of the most enjoyable courses I played last year......(and I played a lot)

If a comp fees are cheaper than a courses publicised green fee before even adding on food, prizes etc, then I think that qualifies for good value.

If Sheringham doesn't float your boat, how about Hollinwell?

Publicised green fees for May....£100 for 36 holes.

MidAm event in May....72 holes plus prizes.....£120

I don't think any of the mid ams are pricey for what you get. They are also catering for people who don't want to spend all day with kids, don't want to compete against bandits in stableford comps and want to play best courses. Club run events will always be cheaper as they are heavily subsidised and I play in lots of them. Sunningdale springs to mind which is 54 holes with lunch for £90. The mid am events are pretty niche and are growing in popularity (thankfully). Agree there is a need for more events for the 21-35 bracket.

I thought the reason mid ams were becoming so popular is because people were getting fed up playing with ultra serious wannabee pros in scratch events? I wish I had a pound for every day I've spent playing in a 36 hole scratch open with some surly kid who can't be arsed to say 2 words to his playing partners. I play for enjoyment, a bit of chit chat and banter adds enormously to the day. The under 35's have plenty of events as it is.

I was suggesting 25 or even 30+ not 18yo.

As I tend to agree, with what your saying, youngsters with their parents caddying (given them false hopes of stardom). Played with one lad @ Notts this year who sent it out there (I was longer 😉) but tried to tell me he could get his swing up to 145mph 😂. He weighed about 11stone!

This is why I enjoy playing in Seniors Opens.
Nobody takes it too seriously, most are happy just to get round in one piece.
And a benefit is that if you get grouped in with 3 old boys in their 80's you can end up the big hitter for the day.
The showers and changing rooms are not a nice place to be after the game (think last turkey in the shop), but it's a small price to pay.
