On the topic of Rules: If you declare your ball unplayable.

Bobmac, this is more for my understanding really, not testing, just after knowledge.

As far as I am aware

I can take a drop within two club lengths, not closer to the hole
If off the tee, go back and replay my stroke.

what are the options if its your second shot and your in dense gorse?
or you are in a bunker?

are there also only certain conditions where certain rules apply, like abnormal ground or casual water?

I dont think I fully understand what my options are if I declare a ball unplayable.

You can also take the ball back as far as you like, keeping in line with the pin.

If it was your second shot, you can take the ball back to where you last played from.

If you are in a bunker, you have to drop within the bunker.

I am new to golf, so appologies if this is a silly question, but what if your ball lands beneath a small tree meaning you are unable to get a proper strike of the ball?

Are you able to move the ball then? and if you can move the ball, what penalties are incurred as a result?

I understood that if you were in a bunker you could opt to take the ball back to as near as possible to where you originally played that stroke (again under a penalty) rule 20.5??

This is the same as the OP ,it is unplayable , you can take the 2 club lenghts not nearer the hole , line of sight which is droping back as far as you want in line with the pin , or go back to position you played the last shot from . all under 1 shot pen.... thats my understanding anyhow , we b both put right shortly if im wrong , good place to get the right answer here

If it's a staked (i.e. young tree needing protection) you get a free drop, 1 club length from the nearest point of relief. If it's not a staked tree then you would have to declare the ball unplayable and proceed as above under the penalty for the option taken.

I wish I knew that at the time. I tried playing it from where it lied an got a face full of tree for my efforts! haha

Only if it is a local rule, the rules themsleves don't cater for staked trees.

I found this on our course which is a tree with a stake (if you look had enough!) and a plastic tube. The trunk is about 1 foot in diameter. It meets the terms of our local rule (staked but no mention of height/age).

Many years ago, i got the opportunity to play a rather plush professional body competition/day at Walton Heath. At that time i was a struggling but reasonable approx mid 20s h'cap occasional golfer.
The week leading up to it i hurt my back decorating (!) but was determined to play. Because it was free i thought i woudl take advantage of paying for a caddy.
Brilliant idea.

2nd hole ball right up the face of a fairway bunker right under the lip. After a few minutes working out how to play it, the caddy says, just drop it outside the bunker for a shot penalty, which i queried, but he was adamant, and so were the rather more experienced playing partners.
I went into so many bunkers that day with so many horrid lies, that i just took an unplayable to get out every time.

Just goes to show that very experienced people dont always know teh rules

I had a nice game of gold though as a result

I'm pretty sure you're quite entitled to declare a ball unplayable wherever you want on the course but since you were in the bunker you either drop in the bunker or go back to where you played the original shot.

But you're right, the way some people interpret rules is amazing. Makes you wonder how many are broken in club comps
