So after all of the tournaments this year where slow play has destroyed the viewing the last 2 groups out in an Open championship have been put on the clock. Are they mad? I remember Tiger lieing on his bag at a par 3 for 20 minutes at one point at the Masters. Remember the painfully slow final round at Torrey Pines this year? 40 seconds isn't long enough to come up with a shot strategy or putt for these players in the final 2 groups pushing to lead a major championship.

Do you agree?

Do you agree?

no

Torey Pines had it's own issues with this regard becasue the starting arrangements made the underlying group timings wrong, so they had no control.......

in fact Torey Pines illustrated very well what will happen if you don't have the normal policy in play!

you only end up on the shot clock once you are 10 minutes out of place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - if you stay within 10 minutes you can take as long as you feel you require.

If they are slow they should be on the clock, if they then take too long over shots they should be penalised. If no-one does anything about slow play, it will just get worse. Well done the R&A

Japanese player taking 2 mins 12 seconds over a shot after already being warned for slow play. Wagner doesn't agree?? I do.

Wagner just said he was mad about being put on the clock because the group behind were over a hole back and they weren't holding anyone up

there is a few ways to play most shots in links. it really should take a little longer than a normal round.

some days if you look around a links, all you can see if groups of people walking around in the rough like hens. its hilarious.

And that's an excuse which is a significant contribution to slow play at club level. Where the group behind you is has little relevance, it's where you are in relation to the group ahead that counts.

I know that, you know that surely the pros should know that. It's no wonder they take 5 1/2 hours to go round

So what happens if 2 of a four ball end up in the crap and take there 5 mins each to look for the ball. They will then inevitably fall well behind the group in front and will struggle to make the time up.

They don't play in 4 balls but even if they did and that happened, the don't get penalised unless you take too long over a shot on two occasions. They know the rules

Simple answer - should call group behind through. Hold on, that's not manly.

It does seam a bit harsh expecting the lad to play his shot in 40sec from the place he was in, but he had been warned peviously.
I hope the players from the far east don't start getting a complex though. :ooo:

when there are 'good reasons' (and having to look for balls, get rulings etc would be examples of good reasons) their par timings can be adjusted and the scope for making up time can be extended - all this would be discussed with the group at the first occasion that time issues are raised with them.

if they fail to make progress of any sort, and their general approach to play and timing will be taken into account, they will be given precise timings to meet (overall) ie finish the hole after the hole after next by 1526h or get put on the clock....there is still scope for further consideration of external factors at this point.

basically, they will be given every opportunity to 'get on with it' and avoid getting put on the clock - some say too many!

once on the clock the opportunity for subjective assesments has to be removed - it's not appropriate for there to be a situation where someone makes a value judgement in the application of a penalty from the perspective of the player, the field or the Rules Officials.

So.....going by what you just said......did the group behind get a penalty for not keeping up with slow penalty player........

As I said on the related thread...when a top player gets a penalty, I'll go along with it.
