Thinking of changing my 20 year old 'chipper' and notice Callaway has brought out the above which is 37 degrees and should be ideal for just off the green.

They retail at about £90 and my question is whether anyone has experience of this club and how useful it is?

There are plenty of clubs in your bag that you can use to chip, why lose one of them just for chipping?

Exactly parmo, well said mate.

I quite often use my 5 wood off the fringe with good success.

These gimmicky clubs are a waste of money, and a waste of space in the bag for sure.
Absolutely !!!

Totally agree, used to own a chipper but found that I could do the job just as well with a 5 wood or hybrid. In any event, could never justify £90.00 for a chipper (sorry putting wedge) I think my one cost less than a tenner.

I appreciate your comments regarding the hybrid but what works for you guys does not necessary work for me.

The point I am making is the experience of other players' using this club which is relevant for me, hence the question.

I honestly think you will struggle to find ANYONE who has paid for this club. I am not disrespecting the fact you use a chipper, I find the fact that Odyssey are asking £90 insulting to golfers. You pay £90 for a putter and use it from 26-40 times per round but you will use a chipper 3-6 times a month.

A chipper has a very restricted use as your and other posts confirms. Why carry it for the very occasional use in preference to a more useful club.

This morning, my approach shots were crap (sorry AliB) but using PW, 9, 8 and 7 irons for chips on to the green I had 8 single putts (and still came in 20 over  ).

Seems to me that the 35 degree you mention is probably equivalent to an 8 iron, but check your irons specs.

I'll own up, I have a chipper and yes I'm over 50.
It cost me £14 so it was worth it to see if it would work for me (when I got it I'd just started and chipping was a black art).
Yes it works, do I use it all the time now - no, as I'm getting better at using other options. Has it saved me shots - hell, yes! and at the end of the day, that's all that counts. Let's face it - why do you all have 50's, 52's, 56's - for the same reason - to save shots.

I have had a play with this club in AG, and if it's for you then fine, no probs, chippers have been around for ages.

My personal view on this was that it sits a little closed, which kind of ruined the point. The alignment aid doesn't help if the face is closed.

I also wondered how long the face would last, as inevitably if it is the bag there will be times when you will hit half shots with it.

Not for me then.

This could beat the debate on to custom or not to custom ;)

I take some good advice from this forum, I generally only use a 7 iron for chipping from anywhere from 1 foot to the green to 20 yards, I can understand people using chippers but I feel its a total waste of 1 of 14 allowed.

parmo, think of it as a wedge, then instead of four wedges you can have three and a chipper! ;)

Of course you could always use it as the club of choice to throw so as to save the Vokeys. :D

I like that idea Viscount, it is a stressful job using irons to chip, and a chipper by save some shots and some stress. How far from the green do you use yours?

As someone who used to use a chipper, I realised that it was essentially just masking bad technique.

Once I put a bit of practice in with irons, grip and stroke - what do you know? I didn't need a chipper anymore and I had a whole new range of shots at my disposal. Plus the extra practice makes you better at chipping in the first place, hence even less need for the club.

How many pros have you ever seen using one? They use the same drivers as us, hybrids/rescue clubs, irons, wedges and balls but I've never seen anyone using one of these.

If anyone wants to buy mine off me, I'm more than happy to negotiate!

I have used it out to 30 yards, but I have also used it round the course when getting out from under trees. I've never hit the pin or holed from off the green with a wedge on up but I have with the chipper.

As I said earlier, I am using it less as I learn more shots and get better control but I only have a PW, SW and sometimes an even more infrequently used 64.

Toon,
Give us Martins & Milner + the chipper for Woodgate and its a done deal ;)

You mean give you something that serves no purpose and has a tendency to ruin my game for Woodagate?

How would that be any change for either of us? :p
