Birdieman's pictures of Spey Valley prompt me to ask. Anyone got any recommendations for courses around Inverness? Our annual pilgramage north is due in couple of weeks.

On the list of possibles are

Brora,
Royal Dornoch
Golspie
Fortrose & Rosemarkie
Tain
Strath Peffer
And almost certainly a return to Boat of Garten.

Anyone have views or comments on any of these? As we usually play 11 courses in the week, there's room for other recomendations - and any will be appreciated.

You missed Nairn (not Nairn Dunbar), essential on a north tour - beautiful course and arguably the best greens in Scotland.

Dornoch and Nairn are the top two on links. Boat and Spey Valley are two top inlanders I'd say.

Castle Stuart must be nearly there now? - looks a must play.

In that area of Spey Valley you have the absolutely wonderful delights of:-

Boat Of Garten
Kingussie
Granton
Newtonmore

All fabulous and very very welcoming. I would recommend every single one of them. Further up the road all that have been said before and also Fortrose and Rosemarkie. I think JF is just back fromplaying it.

Highlands is a great place for a golf break.

We played Newtonmore last summer and it was a really nice course. Lots of different and interesting holes to play, and the scenery at points is breathtaking.

Very nice track.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Will post you what we do in due course

In an odd way J_F's suggestion "to avoid the Inverness courses" was telling - the three of us going had all come to that conclusion - from 450 miles away and with no evidence other than a couple of tatty guide books.

Am definitely looking forward to the links courses in the area. Watch this space.
