Planning a trip to North Wales mid September next year, don't really know the area but initial plans are to play wallasey, Abergele, nefyn and conwy. Thinking of basing ourselves in either Bangor or Llandudno.

Are these good choices for courses in the area, we have a van so can travel but don't want to spend all day traveling? Are we picking the right base, looking for somewhere with decent nightlife and food?

Any other suggestions or tips greatly appreciated.
 
Llandudno is probably your best bet as it is central and has plenty of pubs and decent restaurants. Bangor is not even that close to Nefyn and the roads down The Llyn are not the best. You also have the choice of North Wales (links) and Maesdu (mix of parkland with a bit of links) if you are in Llandudno with the railway line splitting the two courses.
 
Nefyn, Bull Bay, Porthmadog, pwhelli, Conwy, North Wales, Vale of Llangollen all great courses. Enjoy !!!
 
I've played all/most of the "rated" courses in North wales, except any on Anglesey, and would rate them as follows:-

1. Nefyn - not the best course, but for 7-8 holes is a must play.
2. Conwy - good links course, especially tight on the last few holes, as more tree-lined.
3. Llangollen - cracking parkland course in the valley,
4. Royal St. Davids - good links course, but not as highly rated as some make it IMHO.
5. Portmadog - 2 course types in one round, parkland and links in one hit.

After that much of a muchness. Wallasey well worth it if it ties in, but not in Wales. Llanymynech near Osewestry is also a nice course, depending on where your making your way from.
 
We played Nefyn, Royal st David and Portmdog just a few weeks a go!

loved all 3 courses :

Nefyn is a fun course and not to be taken the serious Especially around the estuary :)

royal st david is tough links and was a bit too hard for me, the wind was up and some really tough holes !

Portmadog is a bit of both parkland ( bit dullon front 9 ) and links.but the back 9 is amazing with stunning views !

However they are miles away from llandudno so unsure if it will rock your box!

Agree with the comments about RSD, it's tough but not overly inspiring IMHO. Only the 14th through to 17th are in the dunes, the rest of the holes are very flat. Can't comment on any others as it's an area sadly lacking on my golfing CV which I need to rectify.
 
I absolutely loved nefyn. Even the front 9 had some amazing views and just wet the appetite for the spectacular old course back 9. The rough is virtually non existent so no mucking about looming for balls. Just straight forward fun.

I wanted to play it ever since I clapped eyes on it. Now, I want to play it on a clear late evening with the sun dipping into the sea. This may be hard to accomplish though.
 
the back 9 at porthmadog are great, similar to trallee's back 9
north wales at llandudno is a good links course, too
for a links lover the isle of anglesey golf course is a must-play but beware of weekdays, the raf is deafening
llandudno is great for pubs, restaurants and nightlife
 
Bangor or Caernarfon are ideal places to base yourself. We did this in August and it's easy distance to any course you want. Furthest was Harlech but it doesn't take long to get there. Bull bay is stunning, maesdu is a nice course, Conway fantastic. North Wales is worth a round but not on a par with the others mentioned. You'll get much better nightlife in Bangor or Caernarfon too
