Going back to Caernarfon for our annual society golf hols....

This is our 3rd time and have always played Caernarfon + Nefyn,so this time looking at playing couple other courses.

For those that have played these 3 courses, which 2 in order would you recommend:

Porthmadog
Abersoch
Pwllheli

Also,is there a site that will let you book a package for courses only as we are looking at playing Vale Of Llangollen on the way home,so looking to try n get 3 courses booked together, hopefully with cheapergreen fees rather than booking individual.;)

cheers

I've played these.

If I was to put them in order (all 5) I'd go

N+D

Porth'

Pwllheli

Abersoch

Caernarfon

I doubt you can roll any up/together for a saving. I reckon you might get on the Vale later on in the day for a better green fee.

Why not make a day of it, and travel down to Royal St David's and play it after 3.00pm on twilight?

I started a thread in the review section on portmadog and pwllheli... Id rate both of these above abersoch, and id rate p'madog much higher than pwllheli, althogh pwllheli is a nice course and good value for money. The back 9 at portmadog is awesome , and id never tire of playing it!!

Porthmadog is good(6/10), nefyn is great (8.5/10), Royal st Davids is very good(8/10). Vale of Llangollen is quite good, dependent on greens(7.5/10). Somewhere cheap and brilliant is Llanymynech, good half way stop for on the way back.

Porthmadog
Pwllheli
Abersoch

Although Portmadoc has a section across a road, it's more of a whole than the others - and the coastal section is grand. Pwllheli's start isn't that interesting but it gets better as you go on - and the back section can be brutal if the wind blows (it did when we were there). Abersoch has some interesting holes among huge dunes - but has a very non-descript loop of 5 holes (an odd number for an "add-on", but am sure thats what they are)

Caernarfon isn't too far to get to either Aberdovey or Conwy (for the Caernarvonshire) Both tracks worth a visit.

Never thought of looking in reveiw section will have a nose.

But thx for replies, getting the feeling from some that they want to go to back to Nefyn(which im more than happy with) and looks like Portmadoc is preferred pick for those who have played it....
Would like to play St Davids and twilight option is a good shout to me,but few of lads like their beer :cheers:and it would eat into their drinking time especially with travel time on top:p..

Llanymynech looks nice, put it to the lads as we are coming from Caernarfon to Lancs and can see 1 or 2 gripe that we may be going slightly out of our way,but good shout also..

cheers

Agree with Liverbirdie that Nefyn and RSD knock the socks of the others !

Yeh,they would be my ideal 2 to play, but few of society dont see it that way. They will put up with paying £50 ish for 1 day and then £25-£30 ish for other 2 rounds so av to try n keep every1 happy as i would rather play the ok courses so every1 comes away..

I'm a member at Llangollen and guarantee you wouldn't be dissapointed with a visit any time of year (today and other freekish weather days apart;)) so I'm dissapointed with Liverbirdies comment about the greens as they're in excellent condition with visitors complementing them all the time (other than when they're being worked on of course).

Porthmadoc is an excellent choice and I'd also recommend Conway along with Nefyn all accesible from the A55.

Thx mate,it is nice to get view from a member also, but to be fair to Liverbirdie he still gave it 7.5 which is good to me:lol:

If we do pick it toplay then i will be in touch for some tips:thup:

Have to agree with this, played VLGC quite a few times, and it is one the best kept courses in the area, played it last year and green were immaculate.

Hi Gogg, just saying as I have found the course. Ifirst played VLGC 4-5 years ago and loved it. Played there again and loved it, but went back for two opens 2 years ago, and at the time the greens were bumpy and poor. As we all know, for opens, it is a chance for a club to showcase itself, but not on them two occasions (my mates also said the same).

It is a great course, but as I said, check on the state of the greens first. If great you'll have a great day. The first, eighteenth and the hole along the river are my own personal highlights.

Porthmadog is good (especially the links section of the course), but VLGC is better, if the greens are good, worth an 8 1/4 out of ten. :) Foods nice as well.

Liverbirdie

Hiya mate, your timings are spot on as 2 years ago we had 10 of the greens "Gravel Banded" to improve drainage and it took a good 3 to 4 months before they were back to normal but credit to "Jez" the head green keeper he knew what he was doing as they're now even better showing no signs of the work at all, so come on down and try them out - you know you want to

"Gravel banding involves cutting strips right across the green, about 50mm wide and 300mm deep at about 500mm centres. The machine inserts a small diameter drainage pipe in the cut and then fills it with gravel."

Cheers lar, I'm sure I'll take you up on that in the future, if that's an invite.

I still get the e-mail notices about the opens also.

hamshanker - if the greens are good - go there. Lovely setting in the valley, too.
