The only reason I joined my club is because I know a fair few people who are members there. Even still you find that there is the odd w4nker about. I think that's endemic no matter which club you choose.

Had I have not known anyone I doubt I'd have joined as the w4nker to good-guy ratio would seem heavily swayed towards the former.

For me I enjoy playing different courses, if I spent £6-700+ to be a member somewhere that would be the only course I would be able to play with.

Also the people I play with regularly are scattered about so we play courses in the middle, and I don't think I would want to be a member of a course so far away - I'd want to be able to pop down on an evening for a few holes when the fancy took me.

Who said joining a Club isnt like getting Married ????

I joined mine in 1988, which co-incidentally was the year I got married too.

Now, whilst there have been many times I could have become Single again over the last 22yrs, I've never once considered relinquishing my Membership !!

Mine isnt 'cheap' at £850/yr, and is perhaps one of the more 'upmarket' Clubs in the area, but it is without doubt one of the toughest courses local to me, absolutely beautiful to play, and always in good playable condition.

Add in a good set of Members, very few I wouldnt play with, a good Bar, and the fact that its 2mins from my front door, and quite simply, its a wonderful place to spend some time at.

So is it worth £850/yr ? Or is anywhere for that matter.....thats a personal decision based on your financial priorities, but for me, to be able to toddle off and play a few holes whenever I want on such a glorious course is an absolute no-brainer, and I just wouldnt move. Simple as.

I agree with Chris. My course is easily accessible from home or straight from work and I can go out without pre-booking. Decent enough practice facilities and the core membership is pretty decent. There are some (usually those that have been members forever and think they ownthe place - you know the sort) that I would rather not spend anytime with but otherwose I'm happy. The course is only 5 years old but is maturing well and you can begin to see the potential now the planted trees are beginning to grow. The greens are getting better and better and so I have no plans to move anywhere (unless HID can wrangle a membership at Sand Martins for me)

Parmo,

Although you play on a Muni your club must be a private club which plays over the Muni course ?

The club is separate to the course, it is though open to day golfers and social members and yes you do have a interview before membership is accepted.

Chris, thats a nice course for £850, the range in Leeds is:-

£380 Muni season ticket for all 5 tracks

£700-900 for pay and play courses with no interview

£950-2000 for more private clubs

Golf club membership just seems too inflexible for me at the moment. I've got a young family & can't devote the time.

I would like somewhere that offers a reduced membership/pay as you go scheme. With no joining fee. I hear the argument about members changing clubs every year & the joining fee being a way of ensuring against this, however the club should focus on being somewhere a member wants to play rather than feels obliged to because of the £1000 fee he has handed over.

I have been a member previously, and the experience didn't live up to expectations. I found the club to be full of cliques etc. I also began the process of joining another club. I was put off by what was involved. Initial interview & playing in round with the captain, then having to wait a month to get the green light from the committee. I jumped through all these hoops and still they only offered temporary membership as I had no proposer. The whole process is a nonsense.

Other sporting clubs I've been a member of don't have these processes, Golf clubs in general seem to be stuck in the past
