noisy drivers

I use to have the Cleveland Hi-Bire XLS which would get glances from the other end of a twenty bay range. Very loud but very straight and forgiving and I just use to point to the ball going down the range whenever anyone said anything. The Nike Sumo though could make ears bleed at fifty paces. They were sooo loud.

Don't particularly like the sound of my R11 but doesn't affect the shot in any way so who cares.

Nike drivers are odd, I used to have a square machspeed one and it sounded awful. But my friend has the machspeed black and when he middles it it sounds lovely.

this surprises me. i love the nice wee sound my jpx800 hybrid makes. tempts me into getting the driver.

I like the hybrid noise too.

I have no problem with the sound that my JPX800 makes. Mind you, I did have an FT-5 and an FT-9 prior to that.

It's probably because I'm hitting the ball no where near the middle of the club ;)

I had a Nike Sumo and that was pretty loud, although to be be honest, my current R9 Super-Tri can have it's moments.

Yesterday I was working on shot shaping and using some crappy balls I had found, one was an old Top Flite XL lump and the noise that this thing made was shocking, made my ears ring even on the course. (Thankfully it was shanked into the trees after 3 hits!).

I played with a bloke last week who was using some Nike driver. It sounded like it was made of porcelain - didn't matter though - he was nailing it all day.

They can tune the noise quite a lot during design. They hold custumer clinics with their intended market, and go with the noise the clinic like. Apparently the choppers who used the really noisy Cobra drivers thought it sounded powerful. Ha. Hope they went deaf, although as they were designed for oldies who need help getting it up, they were probably deaf to start with.

Can't go wrong with the sound of a Titleist 910, although I have yet to middle it, so I could be wrong.

Thought id dig this up instead of starting a new thread.

I find many drivers to be too loud (g30 for example) and cant enjoy hitting them due to the noise.

Out of the current drivers (say 2 years ago to now) can anyone recommend a driver that is relatively muted?

Cheers.

The g30 is my least favourite driver for noise. Even when the pros hit it, it sounds terrible.

Ironically, the best driver I've heard recently was the ping i20. Lovely muted thwack. Not sure if that is ' recent ' enough for you.

Sound is pretty much the only difference the r and a allow nowadays.

I had a G30 and got rid of it pretty much because of the sound/feel, same with the Fly Z +

The M2 I've got and the Titleist 915s have the best sound/fell when I tried pretty much every driver going a couple of months back.

Ive owned a few boom sticks recently

Cleveland XL custom - felt ok and was not mega loud
Ping i25 - Lovely sound and feel when you caught it. A lovely sharp thwack and easy to tell where on the face you caught it
TM R15 - Felt pretty good mostly, but when you caught it sweet it sung. A crunch noise is how i would describe it
Adams XTD - Very similar to the Ping i25 if i am being honest.
Callaway X2Hot - now we are talking. The sharpest "ting" feel and a real springy sensation when middled. Absolutely fly's and and (so far) fairly straight

A few years ago I developed tinnitus in my right ear. I had it for couple of years and thought I was stuck with it for life. It started after I had begun playing with a Cleveland xls driver and was doing a lot of range time. I never put the two together until I moved on to another driver and within a month it had cleared up. I won't buy a driver now if it sounds very loud, even if it goes straight every time.
