my club has a putting green and thats it, the course is not bad and small greens/plenty of o/b means you have to be fairly accurate so a decent test & its cheap so not going to leave.

I really want to practice my short game so what options can I consider?

Anyone else have this problem and found a solution?

I used to go to my old club on something like a Tuesday afternoon when nobody was there and throw balls down around the green and then move on and do the same on the next hole. I also used to go round the back of my house to a bit of green but then I thinned one straight into someones back garden and ran away like a naughty schoolboy.

Go out in the evenings when its quiet and practice sensibly on the course. Just 2 or 3 balls at a time.
Don't forget to put your divots back and repair your pitch marks.
But check with the pro first. Some clubs strictly forbid it

haha, quality.

there are par 3 but at 5 quid a pop it would get expensive, considering joining a local club par 3 / gymn membership for £35 a month as would give me plenty of short game practice and spa/sauna/gym but the tight northern git in me is hesitant

Bob, we dont have a pro :)

We dont have much/any practice facilities at my place but I would go out now in the longer evenings and as Bob said chip and putt with a few balls and repairing pitch marks is a must!

I go out solo on our course regularly when it's quiet and practice.
As stated above, replace divots, repair pitchmarks and ensure that if others do get close, get out of the way and let them play through.
I love it. Generally tuck myself away on a quiet part of the course, and practice to my hearts content. A fantastic way of spending a quiet spring/summers evening.

Likewise as we have an area of "public open land" behind our house. Just long enough for a full wedge but ummmm not a thinned one which hit a building next to the playschool which is fortunately child-free for the holidays! Oops :o

i sometimes take at wedge out with me when i'm walking the dog on the beach, good for nipping it of tight lies.

oh wait a moment you live i Stevenage:)

Hi Gibbo I can't get to our course as much as I'd like to but I do have some heathland near me that I practice on. It's great for pitches and chips as I use an alignment stick with a winter mitt as a flag and pace out yardages for pitching as for me is about distance control. For chipping I want to be able to land the ball where I want so I've also got some practice rings that I use as a target area.

good idea tiger, plenty of grass around me. does not having an actual green to aim at make a difference or is it more about carry that matters as I would like to see some roll out, maybe check (no chance with these shovels haha)

bloody golf, its not a hobby its a bloody infatuation :)

oh, just as an aside, extremely jealous of all you guys off 20 and under, if only :)

a field or waste ground, I used to go 3 times a week to one until they started parking cars on it

A good ol fashioned chipping net in the hallway! Very addictive,I don't stop until I've done 5 in a row with the 52 and 58, then I turn it on its side and practice 8 iron chip and runs into it. Simple but effective

Does your club not allow chipping onto the putting green. Have a look at local ranges. There are some within 30 minutes drive of me (Wexham Park/Hoebridge) that have dedicated short game areas. If I was stuck for somewhere I'd dedicate a couple of hours and go and use those. Some courses and members get really funny about you practicing around the greens so you may be getting yourself into hot water irrespective of whether the pro gives you the nod

The beach where I take my dogs has a patch of land that would make a truly stunning links hole, take the mutts the wee girl and blast away.

Only two problems I have to collect my own balls and the wee girl resorts to using her 9i to make sandcastles
