No Scots in the top 20 of The Open?

I think James asks a Very good question here, what has happened to Scottish golf. So many great players over the years, but the highest world ranked scot is laird in 49th. What has happened to Scottish golf?

I've got no idea, I see 16,17, year olds at my clubs who play of +3 and +4 and think how are they not going places.

This was my thinking. One would have thought that there would be some local qualifiers who know links golf inside out. I mean Westwood is renowned for having a crap short game (the essence of links golf) yet faired better than those who play it day in day out. Even Mickelson only plays it a couple of time/year.

IJP is half Scottish.........

Percentage of population wise, there should be 10.5 Englishmen for every Scot but I can't be bothered to count them all......

In a serious reply to a flippant OP.
The Scots have done a lot better on the European tour in the last couple of years.
Five years ago it looked dire but it is strangely the 'journeyman' players who seem to have upped their game.
Like many sports we still punch way above our weight for a nation half the population of London.

Some of the Scots are getting a little tetchy over a bit of banter here. Different story when they are dishing it out

Maybe it was put across wrong or maybe it was the fact JO asked it :D , but on a serious note should a few "locals" not have featured more ? what nationality were the amatuers that were left (genuine question as i dont know)

I think maybe because its that links is played so little on the regular tour now and most of the guys ply their trade elsewhere, there is no advantage anymore for the home grown established pro's ..

Bp makes a good point. But not just Scottish golfers. Only 3 Englishmen in the top 20 out of the uk and Ireland. I'm not suggesting that the top 20 should be all uk and I golfers but perhaps a better showing? A lot of the youth and amateur events are played on links course so and the isles are full of great links so do golfers look to change their style of play upon turning pro? It's really only the Scottish open and the open played on links now so are the playing the percentage by looking to maximise their chances by developing a style that suits inland more?

Mullen was from Devon so I would imagine he plays loads of links golf. Fitzpatrick who won the silver medal is from Sheffield which is just up the road from me and is a member of Hallamshire golf club which is a far away from links golf as you can imagine

ITR
The point I was making was that Fitzpatrick will have played a lot of links competitions and matches over the last couple of years.
Much more than the Pros would have done.

Pretty sure I read that our top scottish amateur at the open now plays and studies in the states. The lure of scholarships over there may have an adverse impact for some of our players due to lack of links.
