This draft has been totally over-shadowed by the unreal fall of Shedeur Sanders. Most pundits had him going in the top five picks. For those of you who don't follow college football. he was QB at Colorado last year and is the son of egoist/former NFL star Deion Sanders.

A lot of NFL executives and front office people were totally put off by his attitude - he is so far up his own backside, he could smell his own intestines. He came across really badly in pre-draft interviews.

He did not only not get selected in the first round, he was by-passed in the second and third as well. Unbelievable. The likes of the obnoxious "draft expert" Mel Kiper was still saying every five minutes that teams should take him. Five other QBs have been picked already including the equally over-rated Jalen Milroe from Alabama who was universally despised by his team-mates for his attititude.

This has been a case of the egoistical me-first college athlete totally being spurned by every NFL team who have realised character and attitude is just as important as potential.

Had a good read up about Mr Sanders on the BBC Site a Couple of days ago. So I am not surprised at his omission.

PS a few words on the draft when it’s done re winners and losers would be of great intrest.👍

Is he likely to still get picked or is that it? I watched the highlights of Day 1 but not sure how long it goes on for.

If he doesn't go in the draft can he still get picked up by a team? If not, what does he do? I watched the Prime doc on Prime and must admit I kinda liked his dad but thought he was far too much, possibly a slight reflection of the modern day athlete maybe?? That might be a bit harsh but the whole I'm the best, I've almost made it already, got a shoe deal etc.

Also, if players get drafted can they still be released before the season starts? It obvious that Travis Hunter would get picked but then I noticed online that he seems to be massively over hyped and possibly not big enough to play the positions he does

We desperately need a QB but we’ve taken 2 in this draft, neither of which fill me with confidence. 5 guys in our QB room now….

Overall a solid draft by the Browns but considering we ranked 32nd on offense last year I’m surprised we didn’t get more on that side of the ball.
 
I have seen 2 analysts about QBs

During round 2 the guy said that QBs go early if you draft a starter, or late if you get a prospect because you don’t waste a round 2 or 3 pick planning to bench it.

Yesterday the other guy said that after the draft the round has no effect anymore. If your round 5 pick is better than the round 3 one or your current starter he is going to play. It’s up to him to show in training who is the best. The team wants the best player to start.

Now, is he really a top prospect that just fell? I have no idea. But I also know that the Browns didn’t wait for him in round 5, they traded up. So someone wanted him at that point. But looking at the war room during the pick, maybe that person went to the toilet.

It’s up to him. Johnny Football played himself out of the league. The Browns proved themself happy to drop trouble.

I think it was an owner call, certainly a very weird one from us!

If he’s as good as he thinks he is then amazing, but I’m doubtful about him. Character means a lot, these young QB’s have to prove themselves leaders amongst men in their 30’s who’ve played in the league for years, they’ll follow someone they can get behind - my hesitation with Sanders is he isn’t that leader. So very very happy to be proved wrong though.
 
OK lots to get to. I will admit I do not follow college football and know very little about the actual players drafted outside of the main names. But all the "who did well in the draft" articles are a total waste of time. No-one knows at this stage.

No.1 pick - QB Cam Ward. Pick out of necessity. Tennessee needed a QB so badly. But Ward would only have been the sixth QB taken last year. He is good but no franchise saviour.

Travis Hunter at 2- plays defensive back and wide receiver. No-one has gone both ways in the NFL (insert your own gag here) in 60 years but what Shohei Ohtani has done in baseball the last few years has opened a few eyes. I expect him to focus on defense but the Jaguars trading up to get him? Will come to that later.

Shedeur Sanders - totally over-rated QB who got huge hype because of his father Deion coaching him at Colorado. He then put off nearly every team that interviewed him pre-draft for his attitude. So entitled, so up his own backside. He refused to participate in any of the post-college season activities and it burnt him so badly. Cleveland drafted him in the 5th rouund when he was expected to go in the first 10 picks at worst. This was a pick made by the Browns' owner Haslam for PR purposes and the word is the coaching staff were really not happy about it.

The Patriots getting the best offensive tackle to protect Drake Maye was essential.
 
How the draft works.

Any player selected - their rights are now owned by that team for one year. If they do not sign, then they can re-enter the draft next year. The only twice I can remember this happening was 1991/92 when QB Craig Erickson sat out 91 through injury and was then re-drafted the Bucs. And in 1986 when Bo Jackson refused to play football instead going to the major leagues in baseball. And was then drafted by the Raiders as an after thought in 1987 and played both sports for a couple of years.

Drafted players have a contract framework after the ridiculous monies paid out around 10-15 years ago to rookies. 1st round picks sign four year deals with a fifth year team option. Lesser terms for lower picks.

Any player not drafted is a free agent and can sign with any team. Some teams throw out $10K-$50K signing bonuses to the better ones. Players can choose where to go but these are the dregs of the availability. But a fair few players make it from being undrafted to becoming Pro Bowlers and super stars.
 
Teams that blew everyone's minds - Jacksonville and Atlanta.

The Jags gave up their 1st round pick next year to move from 5 to 2 to take Hunter. For a player like that??? Cleveland now have two 1st rounders in 2026 and both will be pretty high as both teams will suck in 2025. And there are a lot more QB prospects in next year's draft.
The Falcons gave up their 1st round pick next year to move from 46 to 26 to take an edge rusher who no-one else really rated. The Rams were laughing all the way to the bank accepting that offer.

This guy is an arse of the highest order. Think how much most people on this forum hate Paul McGinley and multiply it by 100. He is a self-professed "draft guru" and makes predictions and assessments on every player, team and selection. And he is wrong so often it is unreal why ESPN keep employing him. The NFL front office people just laugh at him behind their backs.

This year he was all in on Shedeur Sanders, saying he will go third overall, no later than 9. And as he plummeted down the draft, Kiper kept doubling down on his views, began shouting at all the other pundtis and making himself look completely stupid. Expect ESPN to quietly drop him in a few months and he will thankfully disappear from view. But the clips on YouTube of his rants are really funny.

Think of Luis Walsh at the x- factor. Jetward, Wagner, ,… sometimes you need awful stuff on TV.


Can you tell us a little bit how the next process works? Team camp and waving players. If a guy gets drafted and waved, I know they become a free agent, but does the drafting team owe him something?

Depends on the contract. Players will have signing bonuses which are theirs but would count against the cap (more complicated than the WHS to explain). Once they are released, that it is in terms of salary. Some big free agents now have guaranteed salary elements. They can then sign with any team. It is very rare that any player drafted in the first three rounds is released at any time in their first season.

Teams are limited to 53 players with an additional 15 on the practice squad. 2-3 of these can be elevated to the main roster on a week by week basis. Then there is a one-player international practice squad (ie tackling dummy). This is where the likes of that Welsh rugby player ends up but of course the BBC think they are the next Patrick Mahomes.

Pretty pleased with the Seahawks Draft on paper; even Jalen Milroe ;) We actually drafted some offensive linemen which is music to the collective fanbase's ears!
