Next Step Irons?

Good Morning All,

Given that the course is closed AGAIN today I'm going to focus my attention on narrowing down the options for a change of clubs. I'm selling my Wilson Staff D-FY's with half/half shafts to make way for a 'next step' set. I'm after a little advice on what everyone thinks I should look at, being second hand as a set of shineys isn't in the budget. Depending on the year ahead I may be treating myself to a fitting early next year but this is not guaranteed.

I'm I'm 5'9 and batting around 20 at my home course although given the weather I haven't made it into comps this year.

I have been looking at Ping I10's, Wilson FG Tours, Titleist AP1's but I'm open to suggestions from everyone

If you're knocking it around +20 then either of those Pings ought to see you right - they have a fair bit of forgiveness but don't look too chunky.
Callaway X-18/20 is a good one - maybe a bit chunky though
Mizuno MX 23/25 is another good bet
Cleveland CG7 are pretty forgiving but not too chunky either.
TM R7's as well.......

I think it may be the chunky factor that does it for me as my D-fy's are a chunky set. I've just looked at WS Ci9's but wondered if I should bother if I could get FG Tours at a similar price?

My wife bought me a set of TM TP CB's for Xmas and I sold them recently due to a shoulder injury with the intention of buying Graphite shafted clubs however I had the opportunity to try the Cobras which have Nippon NS Pro shafts and after trying various graphite shafted clubs I have settled for a cortisone injection and bought the Cobras as they are absolutely superb.

I liked the TM CB's however I wasn't keen on the trajectory with the Dynamic Gold Shafts. The Cobras have a slightly heavier swing weight, are a club length longer and easier to launch the ball. The heads are of a similar size although the Cobra may be slightly more compact but the TM has slightly thinner top line but there isn't much in it.

The Cobras look similar to the Wilson FG's but don't have the slight muscle back and will therefore be more forgiving.

I'd describe them as a very good transition club for the golfer who doesn't want Game Improvement irons but is not quite ready for blades, 0-20 handicap.

Thanks for the advice but I'be been for a fitting at my local Pro who was absolutely fantastic, but sadly out of my price range. Best £35 spent either way as it made me realise just how far out my current clubs are, massively.

I tried the TM RBZ's, Wilson Ci11's & FG2's, Cleveland CG16's, Ping I15's and Mizuno JPX800's. I've discounted the TM's and Mizuno's and something just wasn't right with them and my stats went haywire.
