Hi all,

I have always wanted to learn to play golf and I eventually took the plunge and signed up to some lessons at my local club.

I am really enjoying it and have found I have fell I love with the game very quickly.
I bought myself a new set of Wilson D250 irons which I am having fun with and I recently bought myself a odyssey v-line putter.

I am now looking to buy some wedges a 56 and a 60 degree. What should I buy? Brand new or second hand? I have been looking at the mack daddy range but I am unsure what to do. Anybody know where to buy 2 wedges for around £100-£150?

I have also been toying with the idea of buying a puttout mat.
Which would you buy first wedges or mat?

Thanks in Advance

I would look at the gapping with the wedges 56 is a big jump from your PW and a 60 is very lofted for someone new to the game. I have the mack daddy wedges in 52 and 56 and they suit all my needs as far as wedges go. Putting mat or wedges I would go for the wedges, you can always find a carpet to putt on.

What irons do you have....up to PW or do you have the gap wedge? Agree 100% with above. Your PW is 43 degrees and given the gaps between your irons are roughly 4 degrees each your looking to get as close to equal gapping as possible.

Assuming you don't have the GW in the set I would be looking at 50/56 or even 48/54

I think wedges are the clubs that are worth buying new as the wear on tear on grooves can have a noticeable performance effect.

That said, if you are completely new to the game 2nd hand wedges will probably not make a big difference and the money you've saved may be better spent on lessons or more playing time.

I've used Cleveland and Titleist Vokey wedges. Both good manufacturers, Cleveland better value imo.
