Im playing there on Thursday, from what I've read it sounds good - a course that rewards accuracy rather than big hitting.

Anyone played there and got any tips or a review or anything?

Definitely a blast from the past and things are done a set way. Short by modern terms, and not one that you can just blast away at. Good bunkering and thinking course. Best to check the dress code as I have a suspicion from when I played it (27 years ago mind) that you had to change for lunch

Thanks everyone, we've already been tipped off about the jacket and tie dress code for lunch - not the kind of club I would like to be a member of but good to try something different!

I'll try and get to the range / practice ground tomorrow and work on some good steady 3 wood strokes off the tee.

Any idea what kind of fee the members would pay at a place like this only to then never play?

Most holes are straight away par 4s. Only two dog-legs are 17 and 18. Only one par five but that's reachable. Tons of heather and penal bunkers. Truly magnificent course and usually empty as hell. I've a buddy who is an artisan member so I get on a few times each year. You do need hit driver because of the length of the par 4s unless you fancy 180 to the green on every second shot.

I have played New Zealand and was underwhelmed by the course. The holes were not memorable and many felt "samey".

The club is good though with a lovely locker room and a nice lunch.

And what would someone from Christchurch know about a golf club in Byfleet ....

he he he ;)

Name any half decent course in the south of England and chances are I've played it :ears:

Surely if there was one course in Surrey that a guy from Christchurch knows then it would be New Zealand.

:D

Actually I put "New Zealand" into Google Earth to check out the layout and was treated to a trip half way round the world.

I like your way of thinking

As someone from Christchurch New Zealand, I should probably have played it more than the 1 time I have - and that was over 10 years ago. I knew someone who was an Artisan member too.

Interesting Locker Room indeed - names of all previous 'occupiers' (dead-man's shoes' were on the members lockers. Each hole seemed to be its own room. Shortish, but the Par 3s are nice. Didn't partake of the food, but looked great with pleasant staff. I believe it's actually the 'sporting section' of a London Club - but not 100% on that. A great place to lose yourself in good company for an afternoon. Hope the weather is better than that forecast!

My attempt at humour, inclyding the smiley and the "he he he" obviously didnt come across - i shall be more blatant in future rather than cryptic :)

Mashie spotted the attempted pun - what must it say about him that he works out my jokes ...?

My sense of humour is a hybrid (not that kind Brendy) resulting from being a fan of both Monty Python and The Two Ronnies when I was a kid.

Therefore I love puns but only as a sort of quasi-ironic, de-contextualised critique of the ultimate futility of the human condition.

and the waitresses ?? they normally feature in any review ;)

Like the course, not memorable! Unlike Brokenhurst Manor! When I played at your course, there were two absolutely gorgeous members of staff!
