New Years Honours List

They should just give to people that deserve them.
That doesn’t include sports people , actors, musicians and especially civil servants and politicians.
I think my dad did deserve his OBE when he retired in 1983 after some years in the RAF followed by over 30 years as a civil servant.
But he was my dad, so I am biased.

We had a member years ago in the early 2000's, did a huge amount of work in the area of disabled golf, represented England at disablity level, left our club, continued to do his voluntary work in disability golf....got an British Empire Medal a few years or so ago.

That's the sort of commitment over a long period of time that deserves recognition.

Sportspeople should not be honoured for winning things. They get rewarded for the win with money, medals, trophies, etc so why should they get a knighthood as well?
I totally agree they shouldn’t be award for their sporting achievements as end of the day it’s just their job and they’re handsomely rewarded for that, same for actors.

Where I think the honours are deserved is for the outside things they do, Faldo and his Junior series that’s been running since what the late 80s/early 90s that introduced so many kids to golf, coaching and kept them in the game even going on to be top players (inc Rory). Beckham and his decades long and continued UNICEF work, Idris Elba for his work in local London communities and helping get kids off the streets and knife crime awareness work etc.

Those are the bits that they have done above their career that deserve recognition not just whacking a ball about and making millions for it, hence why I agree with Rory not getting one. If he continues to do things beyond his career then fair play. Justin Rose does so much to encourage women’s and girls golf that in a few years I can see him being deserving of one.

I don’t believe anyone, except those in certain positions in Government and Royal circles, get awarded for just doing their job.

Quite the opposite there has been many a knighthood and Dame award for people that have just contributed to sport Geoff Hurst, Steve Redgrave, Kelly Holmes, Mo Farah, Gareth Southgate and many more past names listed solely as receiving honours for sporting contribution so just going their job!

None of the above got it for just doing their sport:
Redgrave: The honour was bestowed following his historic achievement at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, where he won his fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal, a feat achieved by no other endurance athlete.

Southgate: Tournament success, Cultural transformation, Leadership & Values, Mentorship.

Holmes: Apart from her Athletics, also he work on mental health and her work introducing young people to sport.

Bit more than “just doing their job”
Also they don’t nominate themselves.

I totally agree there are examples of “gongs for mates” but 99% of sportsmen/actors etc tend to be doing a lot outside of their main “job”

I can’t think of one sports person that has received an award for an isolated ‘win.’ Equally, I think the whole process needs a review if only to regain the public’s trust in the awards.

Unless you're a Rugby League player and then knighthoods are like hens teeth. In 130 years of the sport, only 2 have been awarded.

It’s interesting reading the reasons for people turning down honours.
Maybe they got more integrity than some.

I think some accept them for the right reasons, e.g. Alan Bates, and some accept them for the wrong reasons, e.g. Paula Vennells.

The system is seriously flawed, especially the political awards for donors, but I’d be reluctant to throw out the baby with the bath water.
