If Westwood finishes in the top 2 at the Dunhill Links Championship he will be the new World Number 1.

Who would you rather see in the number one spot on Monday morning?

Lee for me and I would put money on Lee winning this pole.

If anyone votes for Tiger they should be hung, drawn and quartered. Can't believe that even the most ardent Tiger fan on here would deny Lee the top spot

I want it to be Lee because he's a supporter of the Eurpoean tour, but I'm not sure he deserves it. The world number 1 should be a consistent winner, major champion etc. Lee keeps bottling it.

I agree with the 1st part but for me Lee will come good eventually......Sure he bottles it at times but having the No1 tag over your head brings more new pressures and in turn maybe alot more consistency in finishing off tournaments.....
And lets not forget the man on his bag....Billy Foster.....He's as much of a part of that spot as Lee would be....Good Luck to the both of them i say.....
In my Eye's they would be a far batter pair of Embassadors for the sport than Tiger and His Bagman.

i think this is a no brainer,it would be good for golf to see Lee Westwood as world #1 and then follow it up with a major win

Agree about Foster. I could happily punch Tigers caddy from dawn til dusk without getting bored. Maybe being no1 will give him that extra bit of confidence to finish the job in a major

Controversially, Tiger for me.

He has been the best player on the planet for over a decade now and Lee Westwood only has the chance to catch him because of Tiger's time off through injury and his "problems".

If Tiger had been playing competitively through those two periods, he would be so far ahead of the pack that he'd be over the horizon.

Twelve months ago, he had 16.168 points and a lead of 8.129 over Phil Mickelson in second place. His lead was more points than Phil Mickelson actually had!

The rankings determine the world number one and, for me, that is still Tiger.

Totally agree it would be great to see lee as number one, although it would be for his consistency over the years.Hopefully he can win a major which i feel would take him to a new level and maybe he could stay there for a while.

Lee Westwood any day of the week.

He's a supporter of the European Tour. That and he's decided to quit the PGA Tour completely next year to put his family first. Oh and he wants to earn the World Number 1 spot so will be playing this week and next week to defend his Portugese Masters crown instead of just sitting at home with his feet up and letting it happen by default.

Worthy of the number 1 spot without a doubt.

Oh and to those who use the "World Number 1 should be consistent and win a major"...I agree that they should probably win a major (eventually), but he's hardly inconsistent. Finishing in the top two or 3 at countless tournaments over the last year or two (and winning quite a few non-majors along the way) can hardly be deemed as "inconsistent"!

Plus, Woosy, Couples and the like all made it to world number 1 without winning a Major title...look what happened once they'd reached the top spot. Winning a major will come.

I sincerely hope Lee Westwood's name is at number 1 come Monday morning.

I have to respectfully disagree. Has Lee Westwood not been out for over 7 weeks with injury not accumulating world ranking points? And the fact that Tiger (and his fans) can use his "problems" as an excuse for poor play is pathetic.

I'm not denying the man's talent and the fact that he's been the world's best golfer for a decade, but if he can't consistently play to the standard to keep him at number one, he doesn't deserve to be there. Simple as that.

Westwood has been the better golfer over the last two years and has amassed enough points to take over the top spot. He's more than earnt it.

Apologies but it's another vote for Tiger from me, not having a go at Lee, he is a fine golfer and one day maybevhe will deserve the no1 spot but not yet IMHO. We are all aware of Tigers fall from grace and his problems on and off the course but his record is far far better than Lee Westwood and Westwood will never catch him. I think Tigers come back to form is just around the corner.I for one cannot wait.

***breaking news**

BBC reporting that Westwood has injured himself again and may pull out of the Dunhill Links after today...

Woods to hang on again?

Shame really. Probably over done it after playing all 5 rounds last weekend.

I really don't get the "oh, but Tiger would still be number one if it wasn't for his off-course problems" argument though. The fact is, he bought it on himself and wasn't good enough to not let it affect his game. Therefore, he's not the best golfer in the world any more. It's like saying "Oh, Wayne Rooney would have been the best footballer in the world had he not slept with that hooker (allegedly ;)) as it's clearly affected his game". The fact of the matter is, he did and it's affected his game, so he's not the world's best footballer.

That's not to say he won't be once his form returns, but surely it makes sense to have the world's *current* best consistent golfer at number 1?

If the 2 of them are both at their best, entering the last round of a major on the same score, who would your money be on ? I hope Lee makes it but I'd be backing Tiger with my cash

Great post, made me think..

Controversially,

If my granny had of had balls she'd off been my granda!

True.

But to be recognised as the best you have to beat the best and Lee's excellent record just doesn't bear comparison to Tiger's.

Tiger has had months and months off and is STILL number 1.

His status as number 1 is under threat ONLY because of his time off.

Lee is a legend of European and Ryder Cup golf and a wonderful player and sportsman, but the best golfer in the world? Not for me.
