Last year I went down to see Alex @ Orka for a fitting. I was in the market for new irons and had my heart set on some AP2's. I had tried them but wanted to try a few different clubs to see which suited me for function foremost and for looks as a bonus. I had also tried callaways, mizuno and nike before I tried the Orka's.

Anyway, the day after the fitting I had made the call and ordered my new irons and 2 hybrids. The ORKAs were a runaway winner in my opinion.

Its my my birthday tomorrow and I like most blokes tend to be a little harder to buy a gift for. Mainly as if I want something as soon as I've saved the cash I'll go and buy it. This year me and the other half tie the knot (in 2 weeks) so we've been consumed with the related organising and constant bill paying that goes hand in hand with a wedding.

Last week eek she asked what I would like for my birthday and I said the only thing I've been looking at lately is some new wedges. So she agreed to give me £150 towards some. Result.
A quick phone call to Alex had me booked in for an hour session on the gc2. I hit a few warm up shots and once I was happy we got into working out what degree wedges I needed to fill the gaps evenly from my pitching wedge down.

I hit hit my pitch to see what my average yardage was and that was coming back as 146 carry. I currently have a 54 and a 60 degree wedge. I hit my 54 124 carry and my 60 109 carry. So wanted to get an extra wedge in there so I had something from 130 then 115 and then 100.

I ended up being fit for a regular wedge flex shaft 1/2" longer. I have now ordered 52,56 and 60 degree that fill the gaps nicely from my pitch down. I went for the RS18 wedges over the J29. I hit both just as well but prefer the looks of the RS18's. I also went for Lampkin I line grips. These felt really nice.

Once again I had a great experience with Alex and came away under no pressure to buy. He left me to make up my mind and contact him either way once I had got home and had time to have a think about it (not that I had to think about it really)

sorry for the long winded post. I just like to give credit where it's due and it is most certainly due here. I know the brand has a bit of a marmite flavour on this forum but the quality of service I have always received has always been top class. From the minute you walk through the door.

Wow big carry, my 56* only carries 60 yards and my pitching wedge only goes 105 as it tends to not roll out at all.

Reading this makes me thing I am not using my hips to create any power.

I am pretty keen to get a custom fit one day too, reading threads like this only fuels my want to get proper fitted clubs. Lets hope Monday's job interview goes well.

The carry distance on your 54° is about the same as my 9 iron.

Your 60° carries further than my 52° and nearly (7 yards less) then my Pitching wedge.

Impressive indeed.

Sounds great! What bounces did you get the wedges in?

Some people with bruised egos will probably be along in a minute to call you a liar; probably best not to feed them.

It's amazing how many hit pro distances - short games must be horrific though

109yds carry with a 60*, was it an AG monitor?

It was a GC2 monitor. He asked what my carry/total distances roughly were before I hit any shots and that's what came up on the GC2.

They are 52/8 56/12 60/8

:) I'm sure there are plenty of folk hitting the same as me. I'm 33 and have player sport all my life.

Im into my 4th year of golf now. My short hand may not be the best but its far from horrific. My problem is fighting a hook as my bad shot. Good shots see 3/5 yards of draw. I can't hit a straight ball. Bad shots are 20 yard hooks. I've not had a lesson but our new range is about ready to open so I've got my name down for the lessons with our pro. Once I sort that out I'll be chipping (get it?) Away at the handicap as hard as I can.

How many pounds of raw steak do you eat a day?

:) I do love a good steak! I mostly eat chicken though. Mmmmm nandos haha

Thanks for the kind words people. Ill be sure to take a few snaps and attempt a review once I have had a few rounds with them.

I have a mate who had pretty much your numbers a while ago - 110 yd LW etc and 14 handicap.

He was knackered for 60-100 yd shots!

He's now swinging easier and better, has got a short game and is off 8/9 but still uses 2 clubs than me - previously 4! - and booms drives 40-50 yards past me. He does have the capability to really wallop stuff though - which certainly helps in current conditions.

As for the wedges....confidence in them should make your scores tumble!

Re your tendency to hook. Check that an overly strong grip or flicky hands isn't the cause. Consider thinking of Swinging in cricket terms - back between Bowler and Mid-Off.

Trouble from 60-100 yeah I had been struggling with this myself. Managing a few evening games this year has helped massively. I do have a strong right hand grip that I need to address. Thanks for the advice with the swing. I do have a in to out swing but I think my main problem is my hands. Hopefully our pro can get me firing more at the target. :D

I guess thats another thread though.

I found Dave Pelz's Clock Swing great- though not the 7:30.

It's not the in to out swing that the cricket thought addresses. It's keeping the hands/wrists stable that it helps. I have the opposite problem! So I think 'topspin down the line' tennis thought to avoid 'holding off'!

Are you still using Pelz's method? I found it way too regimented and I also struggled with the 7.30 swing. I went back to a more upright shaft and just played it as a mini swing and have found I've actually discovered some degree of touch dormant in the depths for ages. I like what Pelz said and the three swing lengths per club is a great concept but its hard to adopt, especially in between distances. Maybe I'm just rubbish
