New Putter?

After using the same Odyssey White Hot putter for over twenty years, I'm thinking it's past time for an upgrade. While I still favor getting a Anser type blade like my White Hot I'm open to maybe a mallet.
I see more and more players both on tour and at my club putting with Taylormade, Scottie Cameron or Odyssey mallets. I'm playing today with a friends Spyder to see how I like it.
Any thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated.

An underrated putter brand is Mizuno...
I have the M-Craft VI in the bag and it will stay there until it falls apart....when it will be replaced by another one I've got in the garage...
Certainly as good as any other milled putter I've used......and half the price when I bought mine.

I got a counter balance spider last spring and love it. Not the centre shafted version, they just looked too strange for me. Quite a few of our group has gone for the CB versions now.

There are millions of putters out there these days. I would always recommend a mallet over an Anser style, there's just more forgiveness and consistency there. Unless you hate looking down at one of course.

Then you have zero torque options now (that are mostly centre-shafted), or the standard face-balanced ones you had before. Personally I haven't tried a ZT model yet, I am keen to one day to see what the fuss is about!

Ultimately you need to get down to a shop that has a big stock and try hitting a few. Maybe even book yourself a fitting. I wasn't fit for my current putter, but I would still say it's worthwhile doing, given that you probably hit between 35-45% of your shots with this club. I've got a big birthday later this year so planning to try some zero torque options and maybe get a fitting then. 😁

I’ve had a few over the years from oddesey 2 ball, blade style, TM spyder ect. None of them I really got confident with.
Then bought an oddesey Toulon 2022 which I find confidence inspiring 👌 and I think it looks great.

I switched from heel/ toe putters back in the late 80s to a centre shaft one and would never go back.
for 25+ years I have played Never Compromise
Now owned by Dunlop Sports as part of their Sumito group, Srixon Cleveland etc
In the states I think they are sold by Dunlop Sports USA.

Another vote for the Muzuno M-craft range.
I love my Scotty Phantom X8, but if it ever goes on the naughty step, then it's between the M-Craft XS4 or the LAB OZ.1i.
But putters are very, very personal thing, so go try as many as humanly possible!

One of each, why limit yourself?

I used a Scotty Newport 2 for years - then switched to a spider and my putting has never been better. It's been in the bag over 3 years now and I can't see it ever changing; for me it's just so much easier to get it rolling end over end.
My young boy has just started playing regularly so I bought him a Scotty Super Select Newport for xmas - he's easily influenced by the marketing hype, knows Scotty are the best brand, so I figured if he got one, then he'd stick with it and practice a lot (plus they were on sale and much cheaper than other Scottys).
Still hoping it'll be a while till he puts better than his old man though! :)

I'm really intrigued by the TM Spyder, but after years of putting with an Anser type I'm afraid that drastic of a change won't work. I tend to agree it's not the club but the player. I've been a really good putter throughout my golfing career. I still putt well today, hardly ever three putt but I don't make as many eight to ten footers as I once did. The plan is to demo several different types and maybe experiment with those larger grips that are available now.
Thanks so much for all the advice.

Do it! :)

I strongly suspect if I got fitted they'd say my stroke suits the spider much more than the Scotty (anser style) I persevered with. Reckon my handicap has come down around 2.5 simply due to the putter.

And I'm not a TaylorMade sales rep either! :) :)

From what I've read mallets work best for straight back and straight through strokes. Anser types perform better for player who either "cut" or "hook" putts.
That makes sense to me.
