New laptop needed

Why do you want to get away from a Macbook?

I've had mine for 8 years and it's still going strong. I bought one for my daughter at the same time, and it's the same.

My previous experience of Windows laptops was that they tended to go downhill fast performance wise after about 3 years. I used one every day for work for about 20 years as well as having them at home.

The Macbook was a higher initial cost but I reckon we'd be on our third laptop by now, so it's worked cheaper in the long run.

I bought myself a small Lenovo Laptop from ITZOO for £125 end of last year. Good enough for me for browsing the internet, sending emails and basic office work, documents and spreadsheets. 256GB SSD, 8GB storage and runs Windows 11 no problem. I don't need anything more powerful.

What processor and how long does it take to start up?

I’d be interested in how much of your 256 Gb you have left

Just checked. Still have 142GB free of 237GB. I have set up file explorer with a link to my Google Drive so I just use that for all my files. I don't have much on it apart from BitDefender Total Security, Libre Office and the HP printer software plus browser software. It's easy to manage.

It's an SSD so boots up quickly. Boots up in about 35 seconds to login. Another 5-10 seconds after login to be ready to use.
If you look via HotUKDeals, they come up from time to time with up to 25% off. They've gone up a bit now. Just checked, I actually paid £128. It's a great little laptop. A scratch on the lid, but that doesn't bother me.

Re-resurecting an old thread...

My Lenovo lappie has basically died after 3/4 years. More BSOD and different error codes than I care to mention. As my usage is fairly modest - surfing, emails, some streaming, and of course this forum, I've got to look around for a replacement. Nothing fancy or high spec. I am though getting rather cheesed off with the relatively short life of them. Any views or opinions on more robust makes?

Are Chromebooks an option? I know nothing about them other than they appear cheaper than Windows machines and run on Google Chrome.

Btw, thank goodness my Tesco Hudl still just about works ☺️

I would say for such a basic use case a Chromebook would suffice. Something like ASUS Chromebook would be decent vfm.

My advice would be to avoid Celeron processor unless you want to be tearing your hair out with how slow it is. Also avoid eMMC storage where possible.

Core i3 will be plenty fast without being overkill.

And it’s not often I recommend Chromebooks as I don’t rate them at all.

I've got two Chromebooks. The first I bought for Dad but he never used it. The second was free with MrsA's new Galaxy phone.
I wouldn't buy one. They are very slow with a lack of function compared to a laptop which constantly irritates.
Asus laptops are good and great value, if you pick the right one.

Which processor did it have? The Celeron ones are shocking but the i3 ones are a fast as a windows machine with an i3.

Aha.
The specs say...
  • Intel® Celeron® Processor N4500 (1.10 Ghz up to 2.80 Ghz 4 MB L3 Cache)
RRP is £300. After it arrived I looked on eBay and people weren't getting £100 for them in unopened boxes. Presumably why Samsung were giving them away.

That’s excellent value -
