New Irons

Haven't tried any of the MB/Blade type of clubs but was thinking of them in the shorter irons possibly.

Yeah I'd say they are worth a look in the short irons for sure - both reps were from TM and Titleist were pretty honest in saying the MC/CB/Players Cavity Style clubs were selling a lot better than the blades.

Look man up. Solution simple .... 712MBs... the 714 is too gauche ..... Dispersion, mi*****....? just get practising more ... that was my rationale. Lovely to look at, classic and none of the fashion trinketry of the CBs etc from all manufacturers.

They are very nice and they are very shiny

My ego is small enough to know that I would struggle to hit the long to mid irons in them on a consistent basis

I'm in touch with my feminine side to be happy to have a cavity in my irons

It's actually two stand out - think I was being a bit harsh on the Titleist CB - it was just a couple lazy shots

The mixed set has possibilities with the AP2's

But yes the TM TP have caught my eye

I think the older Ap2s are better, maybe you could get a good deal on them for less money ?

I would be more interested to know more about he s55's and the apex pro's both are on my radar at the moment. That is if you don't mind talking non- TM.

The Apex pros are nice irons , gave good results , high launch with the KBS shafts in them with but with the DG the launch was a but lower with a bit less spin, they felt nice of the face - I was getting around 186 yards carry from the 6 iron with great dispersion. The only thing I didn't feel massively confident about was the look at address but it wasn't that bad - very good irons

The S55's gave the same sort of performance but felt heavier in the head , the carry was a little bit less but a tighter dispersion - but just don't like the look of them

Off the two I would defiantly pick the Apex Pros

Surprised to hear you say the Callaway Apex Pro top line is 'too big'.....??
Was it defo the Pro version.....??.....and not the standard Apex model you seen....??
I thought the Pro version was a good looking club, and I wouldn't say it had a big/thick top line

Definatley the pro version - the top line isn't massive - just didn't seem to fit right.

Bit more forgiveness in the Apex - in fact quite a bit more , shots not out of the middle still gave decent results. S55's would need it have a very consistent swing attached to them

Thanks that is food for thought, I carry 5 iron upwards so not really hitting the butter knives I did twenty years ago. Think I will try them both and in. 5 irons so I can judge them. I do like that the pings have the dot system and you can alter it etc.. As I have no idea what my mp52 specs are regarding loft and lie.

I have had my current set of irons 3 years now

They have taken me from an 18 HC to where I am now but ever since joining the forum my feet have been itching for new Irons or the possibility of getting new Irons

So have had a few demo days over the last week with the final one today

Have tried

Callaway Apex Pro
Ping S55 and I25
Titleist CB forged and AP2
TM TPMC ( new model )

They are have their good points and bad points

Visually I'm not a fan of the Pings , the Callaways Top line just looks at big too big

The AP2's are nice but the TM and the CB Forged are just visually stunning clubs

Performance wise - distance was improved from my old clubs by a bit and most of the clubs were all about the same distance and spin with good launch angle ( if anyone wants the figures they can try and remember them )

Dispersion - again they were all similar but the S55 and CB forged were just a bit wayward on a shot not hit as sweetly ( expected )

Consistency - all the same again bar the 55 and CB again - a missed strike pushed a ball a bit

All the same sort of price - all come with my preferred Dynamic Golf Shaft and free grip change to the Lamkins I prefer

So the question is - is it really worth splashing out on new irons for small increases in performance but more an itchy feet type want of change

And what's peoples views on the clubs listed ? I think I have prob narrowed it down to two

And finally I blame you all for me wanting to change or upgrade my irons

Be open minded Phil is all I would say. When I got my irons, never in a million years would I have chose them. I was planning on either gettting the MP-69 or MP-64/69 combo set. The JPX Pro did look a little big after playing with MP-33's, but the figures that the DNA fitting system said I just could not argue with and once I got use to them I love them.

I would have thought that, having got from 18 to 5 with your current set (obviously played well and worked the game out over that time, congrats!) the chances are more than 50/50 that if new irons are going to have any effect on your scores, they're more likely to send them up than down....

Since at least half of playing well is in your head if you 'think' you want new clubs then, mentally, you've junked your old ones.

Go for a brand and model you like and get a good fitter.

It's a waste of time hitting a range of demo clubs because the real loft of the different makes of club will vary and none will have right shaft, grip or lie angle for your game.

In 3 years technology has improved all the good brands so treat yourself to what you fancy that will make you happy which will help you play better -have fun.

Going to give the guy at Tring a bell about the Mizunos - interested in the idea about the hybrid set

Think consistency and control is a main aim

I first got to 5 last September time but crept up to 6 at the moment but playing very.

Think new bats would certainly give a little bit more distance - consistency is key for me though

When i got fitted for the Titleist it was between the AP2's and the MB for me looks wise ( coming from Mizzy MP32's)
My test club was gradually built on the AP2 head until i got the right set up , i then tried the same shaft set up with the MB heads , distance was much the same , dispersion & forgiveness was better with the AP2's ..

if im honest and they were totaly equal it would have been a hard choice and i may have favoured the MB on vanity , but chatting with Graeme the AP2's were more forgiving on the not so good shots , so i went for them for (as you seek) the consistency

As per an earlier thread i found them roughly a club shorter than my old irons distance wise , i hit the ball a decent distance so 1 club didnt bother me much , but as im getting more use to the complete new shaft set up my distances seem to be getting closer to the old ones ..

Played this morning with one of the pros and used his S55's a number of times and hit them on the button - sweet sweet strike of the face , piercing ball flight with so much control and consistency - felt so nice when hitting the ball.

Got a Ping Demo day and they are going to fit me on the day to try them out on the day. Massively impressed with them and even got over the look !
