The time has come for me to go get fitted for new irons.

The dilemma I have is this. I know I have to flog my current X20's privatley to get anywhere near what I would like back for them which is about £350 but I can't go out and buy the new irons with out getting shut first. What will I play with in the mean time, (my old mans maybe?)

I dont want to go and spend £25 on a fitting session down the road because I feel you dont get long enough to try everything. You dont get to hit off grass and I'm pretty sure they wont have any demo sets available for me to lend.

I could always book in with some one like callaway, titleist or mizuno and get a 2 hour fittment but then I will only get to try one name and what if another name is better?

They are good at the place I got my Driver and 3 wood fitted but with irons, I feel I would have to try them off grass and not just for 20 mins.

What do you guys think? Has anyone else had this dilemma when they wanted new irons fitted? What do you think the best solution is?

BTW my budget would be around £450, I would be willing to add about £100 to the £350 I got back for my X20's if I got it.

I also just had an Idea for a get together. :D

At Titleist you don't get to hit off grass, you hit off an impact board initially, and then a mat. All their computer stuff is in an indoor bay. They have a grass area for giving lessons, and I guess you could have a go from there to confirm your choice, once you have made it.

You also only hit a 6 iron, with various shafts, grips, lengths and lies. The other clubs are made to suit the 6i.

It still takes well over an hour.

You will be lucky to get £350 for the x20s, you can buy them new for £340 from golfonline!! the new x22s are going to be around £550 online and £600+ at the usual golf stores for the time being.

It gets worse

I didnt know this so thanks for doing my homework chubb!
I seen them going second hand on golf bidder for about £350ish, mine do have an extra iron in the gap wedge.

Murph, Do you not find that a bit frustrating only hitting a 6I, I would want to atleast try a wedge, mid and long iron after I got the correct specs. Am I demanding? :D

No, I don't need to hit any more clubs than that. Once the shaft etc is correct, the rest just fall into place. If I can't hit a 9i, but I can hit the 6i, that wouldn't make sense, and I didn't get a 3i, because I don't use one.

If you needed to hit the full set, it would take ages, you would be exhausted, the fitter would have to stock all the irons (both styles and numbers), all the shafts, in all the lengths, in all the lies, with all the grips. It would cost a fortune.

Seriously, if you can hit the 6i, you can hit the rest (the swing weight etc should be the same for the whole set). If you choose a set with clumpy wedges that you don't like, that is your look out.

The answer to your question is to find a pro with a decent set up meaning he is a registered / qualified fitter for a number of manufacturers, has good practice facilities at his club to try the clubs out on grass / short game area and also has the option of using a launch monitor to check dispersion, spin rates etc. I am very lucky in the sense that my pro offers all this plus honest feedback, also he is very good at what he does including custom fitting so I look no further. Good luck in finding someone like it closer to you! If you can it would be ideal.

When I was getting my new clubs, I first went to AG in Chester to sample a few clubs with an open mind. After this I went to the driving range in Moreton to try them again, and then down to Foregolf in Chester to try them again, this was so I could see the ball flight and distance I was hitting.

This was all done on seperate days as we all know we never swing the same day after day, and as mentioned this was done with the 6 iron.

The good thing about AG I found was that they put a sticky label on the club so you could see the contact area, and at Foregolf they had demo clubs you could use with no tape on so no extra spin was put onto the ball.

After finally deciding which clubs were best on contact and the ball flight, I went back to AG to get them custom fitted. This was done with the 6i and hitting onto a hit board so they could adjust lie angle if you were heel or toe first into the ground.

I also found that AG when I first went let me hit any club in the shop and different irons within the range.

I say just take your time, try a few different ones (even though you like your Callaways) on different days and go for the ones that feel the nicest and give you the most confidence.

Tony you not thought of a trip to the Belfry you will have around 5 brands to hit costs 50 pound i think usual money back if you buy from them,or just go and hit everything at ag then decide its the fun part of buying a new set of irons

Most of these places that charge for a custom fitting will take the money off the cost of clubs if you purchase on the day. It is a good idea to hit a few of an impact board as the tape on the bottom indicates whether the club is ok, too flat or upright for you and adjustments can then be made. You will find that even if you go somewhere like a Callaway demo day they only carry 6 irons, wedges and drivers.

I think £350 is going to be tough to get unless you can get an unsuspecting golfing newbie or a very amienable pro. Sadly most people know from the various golfing mags that the X22's are on the way so the X20 price is dropping.

My advice is to go somewhere that has a multitude of brands available and I know the Belfry has had brilliant write ups in the past and if I was in that neck of the woods would probably be my starting point

Colin- Because I know I dont have the right setup, I bought these off the shelf before I discovered custom fitting.

Baz, I am booked in at Foregolf Thursday night, its the same place I got my Driver and 3wood fitted. I bought my X20's from AG in Chester of the lie/angle board but there was no way of telling if the shaft was the correct one for me.

Eagle- The place I have booked in at has most of what you have mentioned except grass bays. I might twist his arm into using the grass infront of the bay the fit from as its way out of the way of the rest of the bays.

Andiritchie- I hadn't thought about the Belfry but I will do now. I will check out what they have to offer!

Homer, I have been fitted twice before by the same guy at the range I am going to, they stock almost everything, have launch monitor, lie/angle boards etc and do offer the money back on purchase. They also have the X22's instock, they arrived today!

I guess I am just going to have to except the fact, I am going to loose out on these x20's, the only thing is with the AW it makes the set upto 9 clubs and should pull in a little bit more.

Tony, Have you thought about getting them adjusted to fit ? or do you believe that the shafts are the wrong ones ?

I understand where you are coming from on this as I bought my X20's about a year ago. At the time, I went for CF at the local range, I knew nothing about the process at all & it lasted all of 10 minutes. He just said, yep standard everything for you. I said ok and bought the clubs there and then.

My swing at the time, was more like the act of using a machete to cut through dense jungle foilage!! So Custom Fitting was probably the last thing I needed, lessons and practice would have been better. But, having spent the past year working to develop a real golf swing, I often feel like I should go through the process again to see if I am really standard everything. Perhaps I will after more work on my swing through the winter.

I'd also suggest trying graphite as well as steel. I use to think graphite was for old men (no offence just my naievity but having tried them on a launch monitor and at a demo day I was hitting longer and higher than my steel shafts and my dispersion was much tighter. I haven't got a quick swing but it also gave me a few mph more which has helped

My swing has also changed alot since I bought them.

I dont hit them very far compared to other clubs I have tried. I can play with them ok but I just feel I am being robbed of A) distance and B) accuracy.

If I were to hit 10 7 irons, no two flights would be the same, not even close although they do tend to be reasonbly accurate, when I am playing wellish.

It all stemmed from trying the Orka Irons i bought from GB72. The flight was much better, the ball carried a good 10-15 yards with all the clubs. They trajectory was beautiful and the ball was landing very softly. I cant get the x20's to do this.

I was so confident of the shafts in the orkas that I was turning the toe in/out and shaping shots at will.

I think if I want the most out of my game I should atleast get the correct spec irons and that is what I intend to do.

I quite like the TM irons (i had a set of RAC Combo irons a couple of years ago )but i just feel with some of their recent irons that there is a wee bit too much going on with them at the cavity for my liking .Thats just my opinion of course as im sure that they are good sticks.
