New irons... Not what I expected.

Went in to get fitted for some new irons today and had my sights set on some Titleist AP1s. Tried them out along with some TaylorMade R9s, Mizuno MX-200s, Adams Idea somethingorothers (A7s I think), Wilson Ci-9s all against my current TM r7s.

Found that even though I'd pretty much got my heart set on the Titleists, I hit them way too high and had shedloads of spin (About 22 deg launch and 5500 rpm for the numbers people amongst you) meaning I got about 6 or 7 yards less carry than my current clubs. (This was with the stock Nippon shafts)

I know I could stick different shafts etc in, but I thought I'd try what they had in stock first and see how it went.

Found that the Adams, a brand I hadn't even considered trying, were surprisingly nice to hit and seemed to be a really decent club. Again though, I got only slightly lower launch and spin than the Titleists.

The TM were next and found them to be very nice indeed. The spin came right down and the launch angle was a bit lower, resulting in an increase of about 5 yards on my current club.

Tried the Wilson and it was the worst of the lot. Not a bad club by any means, just the stock shaft gave me a horrid high ball flight and loss of distance.

Then I hit the Mizunos and it was love at first sight. They instantly felt different and nicer off the face. The ball flight (with the stock Dynalite XP r flex shaft) was slightly lower and more penetrating and I gained about 7-8 yards carry (average over 12 balls) over my current irons.

Hadn't even considered the MX200s and am very glad the pro got me to try them out before buying the Titleists blind.

I realise I could have probably brought the spin/launch down on the other clubs with different shafts etc etc, but the mizunos were pretty much perfect straight off the rack. Just need a little tweak on the lie angle and I'm off.

Hi Brendy, yeah I did. I am always a bit sceptical about the distances etc on the machines in golf shops etc so I did a direct A-B comparison. All distances etc are relative to that machine.

Good stuff, when I was looking at the G15 I made sure I could bring my own driver in to compare. I am sceptical as they can be "configured".

I think I would have still tried out the Mizunos with different shafts just to try and get the best set up possible as after all you are spending loads of your hard earned dosh

Strangely the machine in this place seemed a little 'light'. i.e. it was telling me I hit my 6 iron a few yards shorter than I thought.

I've got a set of mx200's and they are an amazing club, feel so nice off the face and look nice even theough they are pretty forgiving.

Just out of interest how much are you paying for them?

Shame you didn't try the AP1s with a different shaft. I had the same problem with the stock shafts, switch to the PXs and happy days. Anyway I hope you enjoy the Mizunos.

mx200 are great for the money, i could hit anything better the only thing that tempted me was a set of old mp33 which would on my part have been ball striking suicide.

glad that there is another mx200 player out there, look forward to hearing how you get on with them.

i added a gap wedge at the short end, for something a little lighter than the pw and longer than a sw.

the pw really puts the ball out there, a very reasonable ball flight even if they are not blades.

Yay welcome to the club. I had Dynalight Gold XP in stiff fitted in my MP 53s, they dropped my spin too but I hate the high launch characteristics of the shaft. Saying that, they drop the ball out of the sky with ice on but land nice and softly on the green. I feel like I could get alot more distance with another shaft but would I take range and flight over the dispersion I enjoy at the moment.

Anyhow, look forward to hearing how they play for you.

I've got the same irons/shafts, fitted at mizuno in Wrexham. I had similar problems at the fitting with the high flight so the fitter recommended reducing the lofts by 1 degree,seemed to do the trick, plus 1/2 longer shafts.

maybe something to look into, Mizuno may do them for free depending where you bought them.

My 'fitting' was done at Direct Golf UK in farnborough by Simon Hoffman. I'm paying £350 for them

I don't know what's involved in a full on custom fit, but this basically involved taking a couple of measurements from me, hitting a dozen or so balls with my current club and then having a go with all the clubs in my price range suitable for my game and once we'd picked the mX200s, we went on to lie angle.

I did recall you saying that before when I started hitting them so high, and I would have tried to go for different shafts etc, but the mizunos seemed to just suit me as they were.
