Upgrading our twenty year old boiler for a new Combi, which is going to be fitted in the airing cupboard. Getting various quotes in, all around the same price, give or take a couple of hundred.
Best reliability out of Valliant, Glow Worm or Alpha?

Another vote for Vaillant.

Originally my choice came down to Vaillant or Worcester Bosch. I chose the latter due to the longer guarantee, I have a 32kw boiler which is probably bigger than I need but it was chosen for the extended guarantee.

I have had had a couple of minor repairs in the 15 years I have had it and the guy who has done the work recommended to me to keep it repaired rather than replaced because of the size of the heat exchanger.

Personally I would recommend (if you can) - change the location to the kitchen with a combi. The Vaillant cones with a preheat temperature setting* for hot water which can be turned on and off to save water and I often change the heat setting for the water as well

* at least my model does

Worcester Bosch for me - the extended warranty is well worth it. Our last one was good for over 15 years. Replaced it 3 years ago with a newer model and not regretted the decision.

Don't think that is an option but I'd prefer it.
Our current venting and gas pipe locations are a little restrictive.

We’ve got an alpha boiler and my mate is an approved supplier so we got a 10 year warranty with it

Valliant and glow worm are the same. I live 5 mins from the factory.

Good question though. I know my gas man doesn’t like my Worcester Bosch though as it’s a pain to work on.
Somebody said ideal or baxi as they still use copper instead of plastic pipes.
Not sure if that’s an issue, relevant or if I dreamt it entirely.

Stick with Valliant Rob. They're a few bob more expensive but definitely worth paying the extra. Glowworm are part of the Valliant group. Swerve Alpha.

Got to be honest, I'm erring towards a Vaillant. I've been quoted a good price on a 25Kw model, but my mate has advised me to go for the 30Kw version, so going to see if there is a little wriggle room.

Anything bigger than a 2 bed flat/2 up 2 down house then go with the 30kw

A quick read up on the 25 and the 30 I would go with the 30 and is less than £100 more expensive.

It goes in to eco mode when less heat is needed but the same is not said about the 25.

We're three bed semi with about 10 radiators. My mate said he doesn't fit 25Kw now.
Depending on your budget, i would reccommend a Valliant 832 Ecotec Plus to be fitted with a Valliant filter and VRT programmable roomstat. As long as its fitted by Valliant advamce installer you will receive a 10yr full parts and labour guarantee

If you need any advice send us a pm sir

Many thanks for your advice lads, it really is much appreciated.
I've got two more lots of quotes to come in on Monday, looking at roughly £4k for the work. This involves removing the old floor standing boiler in the kitchen and moving everything upstairs into the airing cupboard, obviously ditching the water tank that currently resides in there. Running pipes from the gas meter downstairs and a new ventilation flue out of the external wall behind the airing cupboard as our current flue exits at the chimney stack. Cheapest quote is about £3500.00 with a Glow Worm boiler up to about £4200.00 with a Bosch jobbie.

We replaced our Worcester Bosch Greenstar with a Vaillant. Our CH Service Engineer recommended getting one, with one important reason being ease of servicing compared with WB, particularly relevant for us as our boiler is low down in a cupboard and so not easy to access, especially whenever there was an issue towards the back of the WB.

We too had to move our very old floor-standing boiler when it was condemned and we were unable to have a replacement in the location where it had been in the kitchen where the range had been. We put the new one - the WB - upstairs into an airing cupboard…it was a squeeze. word of warning about the condensate pipe if going combo/condensing boiler - make sure the condensate pipe is sized large enough and insulated as ours was originally too narrow and once it was outside it would feeeze up. When that happens the boiler stops.

Excellent advice. This also happened to my mum's new boiler.

What are your reasons for choosing to go with a combi boiler?

We moved last year to a house with a combi boiler. First time we've had one. On reflection I think I prefer a traditional system with a hot water tank.
