Never playing safe again...

5 iron not an option on this tee shot as there is also a water hazard in front of the tee at 170yds

That's a good test chap! Tough finishing hole especially if the tiredness is setting in, don't beat yourself up too much it sounds like it won't be long until you're back at that tee box with a better score and a different mindset after this and next time you'll nail it

Doc....theres so much room to the right before the OOB's! I'll have to reaccess and say you should've let rip the the driver.

Google earth has got it all wrong unless I'm on the wrong hole. Are you sure of those yardages?

I thought it looks a bit confusing too. If that first water hazard is 170 yards how far is it to the fairway? Because it looks a fair few yards past it.

Alex, those small trees that you can see in the picture aren't so small and i have been kind with the OOB boundary, theres a lot less room and a lot higher rough than in the photo.

Bob, downloading google earth now will check.

Cheers

Bob,

Just looked on GE

197 to the corner of the water hazard from our competition tee position (right at the back of the tee)

180 to clear the hazard in front of the tee and reach the edge of the fairway.

138 to clear the hazard and end up in 6" marshy rough

Have definitely been kind with the OOB, zooming in more the OOB boundary is 2 yds inside the treeline.

Cheers.

I came across this link the other day (can't remember whetehr it was linked to off here or if I was googling gps) http://gpstracklog.com/2009/08/free-gps-golf-course-maps.html
which leads to this one (make your own) http://users.wowway.com/~don_barger/Map-page.html

Can you put the postcode into this and get some yardages off it and re-post, it might clear some questions up.

I would think if anyone does those how would you play this hole type of posts this might be a useful tool.

This sort of thread is interesting to see how different people would go about different holes. Be nice to see some more like this :fore:

I was in the position about a month ago to shoot sub 80. Par 5 finish at silverstone and the 17th a par 4. I had 71 strokes up to the 17th and was on the fringe for two and 3 putted!! Now I need an eagle to break 80 so I wound up a big drive, aimed slightly left of fairway to let my fade(slice) bring me into A1 position only to cream the ball straight as anything and carry it to the OB. I really think it would have been a 250+ drive. Walked off with an 8.

To be honest I'd forget about the last and enjoy the golf before and getting into the winning position even if you didn't finish it off. Out of interest does a 3 wood not get you into a safe area which would be easier to hit under pressure

Looking on GE, I'd 3 wood to safety and then either lay-up to the last ditch or play over it depending on how good the drive was. The lay up leaves about a 7/6 iron or a wedge if you carry the ditch....

Too many people instantly pull out the driver on a par 5 - because it's a par 5!!

Incidently, I remember walking through Vale when they were building it. HID's parents live up there and we were out for a walk around Whitegates and the path led us straight through the course.
Looked nice then - and they hadn't laid much turf!

The problem with 'playing safe' to protect a score is that you're using a club you wouldn't have used very often before in that situation, and heap the pressure on yourself. Recipe for fail imo.

Spot on... now if it had been in your gameplan from the start and you were mentally prepared it would have ended very differently!

I think rather than never playing safe again you need to develope a safe game plan, practice it and then put it into practice when required!

What you did was defiantly a recipe for tension and a poor swing.

You big bunch of jessies!! Get your driver out and effing welly it!!

Imurg,

My 4i is my stock go to safe shot, I went one bigger because of the wind.

I had every confidence in my 4,6,6 strategy just compensated for the extra head wind.

Driver and fairway 4w are killing me at the moment with a bad slice, or topping them, had 3 lessons in 2 months and spent hrs trying to groove some sort of consistency but it just ain't happening, especially in windy conditions.

I know it is something small but in lessons I can hit them, out on the course I can't, could even be a mental block.

Even so, I am playing some of the best golf I have ever played with my irons, wedges and putter.

If you are ever coming up this way, give me a shout and we'll have a knock.

Cheers

My best ever round started with a 10 but that was probably the 'best' way of having a blob as at least I didn't bother about how I was scoring during the rest of the round as I knew I'd blobbed the 1st. The pressure of having the good scores on the first 17 makes a big difference when you are standing on the 18th tee!

Well,

Saturday tried the 4i route again - came off with an 8...

Sunday medal I decided to hit driver after discovering where my bad slice comes from thanks to a refresher from Mark Crossfields app.

Hit a big high draw against the left to right wind, aiming at the left fairway, result:

SPLASH, right in the middle of the water...

Came off with a 7 :fore:

Roll on tuesday night roll up lol
