My journey to scratch!!

The part I struggle with is why do people think that strangers give a damn about someone's "journey to scratch". All so narcissistic to me

It may be narcissistic, but it all depends on how the content is produced imo.

Just look on youtube. Packed with guys in their 30s and 40s, with some who make a living of it, some more successful than others, by putting out videos when they're basically out doing the exact same things as we do every single week. Why people are interested in it? Do not know. I know that I'm watching a hell of a lot of golfers on youtube though. :)

If I had the means and time, I think I actually could consider doing the same thing. One part probably some sort of vanity, but it would also be to hold myself accountable and to make sure that I stuck with the plan to reach my goal. You may not reach the goal, but as long as you've stuck with the plan, no shame. I don't know how many plans I've written down for my own golf on how to improve, just to wake up in the morning and go "nah, tomorrow", and that's that plan gone.

But again, having said all this - I'm not starting my own youtube channel for people to follow my journey to scratch. :)

Best of luck to you mate. I set myself a similar target for myself (cat 1 from 10 hc) in January 2020. I was practicing 5+ times a week until March, and then something called coronavirus got in the way

When we first came back from lockdown, I was playing 4 or 5 times a week, and hitting in the mid to high seventies consistently... But it just never really happened when I was playing qualifying comps, I started full time work again, and it all just dwindled away.

I'm going to set myself the same target this year, but I daresay that a proper full lockdown will intervene again at some point...

I agree with an earlier point about enjoying practice - to help with that, you should play games with yourself. eg start your putting practice with 25 3ft putts. Then at the end of your practice, do the same. Always try and beat your first score (or level it if you got 25/25), and always work out your overall percentage from those 50. If you want to be harsh on yourself, don't go home until you get 23/24/25/etc in a row depending on how you want to play it. And don't hit the same 3ft putt again and again - it will be boring and you won't learn much.

Also, listen to music/podcasts whilst you're doing it if you get really bored :)

Thank you mate, really appreciate the post! I also hope you can achieve your goal as well and we can have a much better and more successful 2021! ?

I would have a look at Rob McGarrs You Tube videos. He set off on the same journey, and did not enjoy the experience.
His videos are very insightful.

Only thing about him though is that he actually quit his job to do this if I remember correctly? I'm thinking he thought the channel was gonna take off in the sense that he could make a living out of it, but obviously just pure speculation from my side.

If you got a coffin full of cash, then by all means go down the same route, but if not, don't quit your daytime job in your pursuit. :)

Good luck pal....

Every scratch or cat 1 player I have played with are phenomenal from 100 yards and in and also every putt they hit looks like it is going in the hole... that would be my focus for you...

Good luck. And ignore the terminally negative posters on here.

When I were a lad it took me 4 years to go from never hitting a ball to single figures. Then probably another 3 to get down to 5. That was without any coaching or pounding the range. I did practice chipping in the garden a lot.

Getting from 5 to scratch would have taken a monumental effort as I didn't hit it very far an my putting was awful.

If I were to try now I would be working on getting stronger to maximise distance and learning how to putt.

I'm one of the very very few on here who've done what you want to do, so I know what it takes.

It doesn't and didn't involve Instagram, YouTube or whatever other public channel.

Ask scratch players in real life, they'll tell you the same.

So why not pass on some of your worldy advice rather than mocking someone?

One other piece of advice I'd give the OP is to play with scratch golfers as much as possible and learn from them.

Probably best avoiding the miserable ones though.

Disappointed to read this.

I imagine it is a lot easier to get to scratch with the new handicap. Even as a 15 handicapper, in theory I am only 8 rounds away from being a scratch player. How many rounds of shooting level par would it have taken on the old system to get from 15 to scratch?

Watch some golf sidekick, he addresses the strategy and mental side. Which means you can go low with an appalling game! The scores are the motivation and the honesty is assessing every round for weaknesses and spending time correcting those weaknesses.
I never got to scratch on the handicap, I got low enough to go pro and hold a couple of course records... then the pro stuff was to sit in a shop for 3 years to become PGA qualified, do a few courses on business and some technical stuff. All I wanted to do was hit balls ..

Agreed with above, sidekick is quite an interesting channel:-

Golf Sidekick - YouTube

Best of luck with the quest, hope you have great feel and a good consistent swing with clubface control.

Cool story bro.

Best way to scratch is to join a really easy golf course and make sure you play all your golf there. Good luck.

I would say just keep doing what you are doing.
Set small targets like.....
Try and break 75
Try and keep a 6 off your card
Have no 3 putts in a round
Then work on your weaknesses....
driving, pitching, putting etc
Most of all, you MUST enjoy practicing because you will be doing lots of it, just to get to cat I never mind scratch.
It's not impossible but if it stops being fun, forget it.
Good luck.
Ps It was Michael Aspel who did This is your life.

Couldn’t agree more, pretty much lived by the above and got to 7, no longer was it fun as i was fixated with cat1 and ended up imploding. That was 5 years ago.

That was coming from someone who was 35 at the time, had no kids, worked local so practiced at least three times a week, had regular lessons and had played on and off for 20 years, 5 full time.

YAWN.

No scratch player does this crap.

Just play, if you're a scratch player you'll get there, especially now under WHS.

And what 31 year old quotes This Is Your Life and Parky?

I’m glad you’ve got a good sense of humour. I bet you’re a barrel of laughs at a party

I don't know about parties, but he's a barrel of laughs on the course. (y)

Some on here who have been brought up on a diet of social media see it as the way to go and believe that the world will stop turning without it. Those of a more mature vintage will have a different take on it and fail to see the fascination with it. If you post something like this you're going to get both views.
