was at the docters the day (well finally after 18n months of trying for an appointment) and she suggested exercise to help with my sleeping issues. i told her i played golf 2- 3 times a week. she laughed and said take up exercise . cheeky:mmm:

Had you said you walked 5 miles, with moderate stretching throughout, 3 times a week, the reaction might have been different. :D

Though it doesn't appear to be working,

Did she suggest alternative pre-sleep 'exercise'? :)

Walking 4-5 miles 3x a week whilst carrying or pushing your bag isn't exercise aye!

Think you need a new Doctor that knows what exercise actually is, if your still struggling then perhaps there are more things you can be doing maybe even just a brisk 20 min walk each night before bed or some form of stretching exercises.

As a personal trainer I would say anything you do over and above your daily routine is exercise. Remember most doctors are trained in medicine and not fitness/exercise.

Doesn’t take a doctor to know your doctor is talking bonkers. I have great doctor who gives golf lessons in his surgery.

A couple of years ago I went with what turned out to be tennis elbow. I mentioned my golf and he immediately blamed my grip, then proceeded to get out of his chair and demonstrate the correct grip and how tight to hold the club. He also said to take a winter break from golf. (Which I ignored)

I learned afterwards he is a single figure handicapper

Sorry to bust your bubbles but she is dead right.

To prove the point, how many times do you get out of breath when playing golf?
Slouching round a golf course in 4 hours is NOT exercise.

I would suggest there's a claim for medical negligence - she knows nowt! I've been to my Doc about my aches and he's firmly suggested I need to play more...

What was his reason for saying that - medical, or is he a part-time greenkeeper?

Seriously, I'd like to know.

There's a woman in my office that seems to get out of breath walking from the front door to her desk, but I wouldn't call that exersize either ;)

Perhaps, but most have a good understanding of human physiology and the issues around improving cardiac and respiratory function and the effect of exercise on diabetes and other disease.

Nevertheless, as a doctor not trained in fitness/exercise, I think golf is a useful form of low intensity exercise which will burn calories (so long as you are careful at the halfway hut), get the heart rate modestly elevated, and stretch a few muscles and tendons. Obviously you will get more exercise if you carry rather than push, and ride on carts are not much good at all.

Y'know you could be right, never thought about him being a part-time greenkeeper, and all the time I thought he was refering to the need to give my tennis elbow a rest and time to recover :mmm:

It is a form of exercise , just not cardio-vascular

Got to be better than sitting on your butt stuffing crisps though

Agree golf is some form of exercise but so is walking to the pub.

Far to many middle aged golfers who previously played active sports think that 40 rounds of golf a year is enough to keep them fit.
They are kidding themselves, especially if they are plodding round in 4 hours. A two and a half hour round will give you a decent amount of exercise.
It is a bit like someone who does the marathon in 5 hours calling themselves an athlete. I could walk a marathon in 5 hours and I am a pensioner.

How many 'fit' middle aged golfers could jog at 6 to 8 mph for 20 minutes without any hardship, not many I would think.

PS When I was a Head Greenkeeper in the 1970's I visited a new doctor who asked if I got plenty fresh air and exercise!!

Of course golf is exercise! How can walking 10k and being on your feet for 4 hours not be exercise?

1 round of golf a week doesn't mean you can stuff yourself with endless take-aways and beer but it certainly can be part of a healthy life style.
