"There are only 8 two-digit numbers with 5 ones. Is that right?"

Stumped me!!

Is that the actual text? Is so then the answer is no . 😉

As the answer is 18 and 18 is fewer than 20, then she is correct.

It's MATHS or MATHEMATICS, never Math.

1 + 8 = 9
9 x 2 = 18

So the two numbers added together (sum of its digits) multiplied by two (twice the sum) = the original number.

Assuming that the question should be "5 once" rather than "5 ones" I agree with you that it's 17....

Maybe the question is written correctly and the answer is no, as there are no 2 digit numbers that contain 5 ones, because then they would be at least 5 digit numbers.

This comes across as more of a test of English, or lateral thinking than maths. Either that or badly written question.
