Phoned up on Friday pm inquiring about playing on Saturday and conversation went like this

" Hi , we're looking to come and play at your course tomorrow , when would be a good time ? "

" OOh it's our big Open tomorrow and we're fully booked and course is closed to green fees . ( slight pause ) What time can you get here ? "

"Any time early "

" Cool get here for 7.45 then and we'll get you off before them "

"And we need to hire some clubs"

Yeah no problem, I'll sort some for you tonight"

Rolled up at 7.40 , having left $90 in cash in motel room for overnight stay as reception not yet open.

Paid our fees, $15 each ( around £5 then ) sorted with clubs and off we went, round in 2.5 hours and returned clubs. Went into clubhouse where the Ladies were putting food and etc out and asked for a coffee before we headed down to Dunedin. Chatting away and explained on our Honeymoon and they gave a us a really good feed and wouldn't take a penny for it

In fact all of the courses I've played in NZ are very welcoming and friendly :thup:

Most to be honest. West Hill Bearwood Lakes and Blackmoor stand out though

Doral for me. My mate is a member there and they could not do enough for me, everyone in the clubhouse was very friendly from the staff to the members. Was really impressed as 4 weeks before they had hosted Tiger, Bubba et al, and they really looked after me.

County Cavan the captain was in the club house and chatted with society members while making sure we got our free coffee/tea and was very friendly.

I only went into Castle Stuart to have a look as we had an hour to kill before flying home from Inverness. They were great even when I said I explained why I did not want to play. Showed me round too.

Many other Scottish courses have also been very welcoming. Nairn and Strathpeffer where members said " Come and play with us as it will be much better than playing on your own" and then not being allowed to buy a drink afterwards.

Kington in England where everyone in the packed clubhouse seemed to want to see how we had got on and what we thought of the course.

In the UK, Castle Stuart followed by Archerfield. In the U.S. it was without doubt Grand Cypress in Orlando, outstanding service.

Mullion, down on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall. I came away from there so impressed I wrote a review on here about it. As someone just down in Cornwall on holiday I wasn't really expecting too much of a welcome and when I rolled up to the first tee by myself my only hope was that the three members already there would let me go off ahead of them. Instead they asked me to join them, guided me round, and invited me to join in with their swindle later in the week! Very much hoping to get back there at some point, especially as I'm now a member of a club that has a reciprocal agreement through the 1895 club.

Even my Playing Partner was very welcoming that day by agreeing to let the oppo play against just one of us

Weren't you telling them that you could beat them single handed with your legs tied together and wesring a tutu?

Hunstanton were also brilliant for me. I was a single and they arranged for me to play in their Friday roll up. After the round I was welcomed into the clubhouse like an old friend which is a contrast to Royal West Norfolk where I was not spoken to by anyone other than a groundskeeper.

I also had a blast at Lindrick and Formby. Helped that theyt had South Africans working there

Recently it was castle Stuart as everyone is saying but also, maybe surprisingly, muirfield. Might have been because I was a rare female but a couple of staff members there sought me out and chatted to me. Made me feel really welcome in contrast to its reputation....

Going back a few years to my nomad days, the club that really sticks with me for the good welcome for two randoms turning up on a 2 for 1 deal was West Linton. A great wee club.

:thup: one of the reasons I joined was the welcome I got when I turned up to ask about playing as a visitor with my old man.

Aside from that, I think I've been very lucky in my experiences. I can only think of one place that didn't give me a decent welcome and that doesn't belong on this thread.

As others have said, though, North Berwick stands out as being particularly welcoming. Really nice atmosphere there.

Southport & Ainsdale in Liverpool. Weather wasn't great that day but the secretary made a special effort to sit down and talk with us all, asked where we play, history of SA, tips and tricks, etc. He was there also at the end of the round and gave us some drinks on the house. Epic.

As others have said.. Castle Stuart. Considering the whole set up there its as much a day out as a round of golf.

I was also impressed with Fortrose & Rosemarkie.
